I am currently waitlisted (#2 for a class of 18) for Spanish 1060 (Accelerated Elementary Spanish). I was wondering if I should go ahead and email the professor to ask if she would accept me if I showed up on the first day of class with a course action form or if I should just give up and try to sign up for another class. I know that people switch around a lot the first week - do students usually do the same for this class?

2 isn’t bad. You could email the professor that you will be coming to the first class in hope that they would consider signing a course action form within the first week. Language classes are usually restricted in maximum size so it is not a personal thing if no one else drops out. But #2 is high if 2 people decide to take something else. In the meantime research a back up and go to that class as well. My first semester I really wanted to get into this one math class. But I ended up liking my backup class more than any other class I ever took at UVA!!

Going to the first class is a good idea. I believe the rule in the Spanish department is if someone doesn’t show the first day, they are automatically dropped. So the number in class the first day will be a good indication of whether you will get in the class. Don’t count on the professor accepting more students than the posted class limit though. Definitely have a backup class, and to avoid getting behind, go to that class, too, while you sort out Spanish.

It is important to remember that while UVa has a very liberal drop/add period and encourages sampling classes, the professors treat those first two weeks as real. They are not waiting to see who ultimately is in the class before teaching.

What do I do if I am wait listed for a class in the same time slot as I am enrolled in another class?

Do I just show up to the class I am wait listed for?

Bigshot, if you have two classes listed for the same time slot, on the first day you should always go to the one you are actually enrolled in. For the class that you are waitlisted for, email the professor beforehand and try to get an assurance that he/she will sign a course action form (I assume you want that class more than the other one). If the professor says yes, then you can blow off the class you are enrolled in and show up to the waitlisted one.

Tough call, bigshot. If you are looking at Spanish 1010 and are WL # above 2, the odds of getting in are virtually nil (and they are barely better if you are 1 or 2). In that case I would go to the other class.

Thanks…

I am 4 on the Spanish wait list. I am going to email the professors and see what they say.

I really want Spanish as my FL.

I am having trouble locating the professor’s email. Is there anywhere that these emails are listed/found?

department website (google uva classdepartmentname)
or search with the box on the front page of virginia.edu for people
sis will have the name

How would you go about emailing the professor, without coming off as demanding or writing without a strong point.

Can you assure me that you will sign my class action form? -No, because I cannot predict the outcome of the first class attendance.

I really want to enroll in this class. - Yeah, you and everyone else.

If I show up to class and enough people that were originally enrolled do not show up will yo let me in the class? - Obviously

But I do think it is a good idea to email them to at least get your name in front of them but I am not sure of the best way to go about this.

You can tell the professor how interested you are in the class, explain your situation, and then politely ask if he/she anticipates having enough room in the class to accomodate you. Pretty easy, and it has worked for me more often than not. If the professor tells you that it isn’t likely that you will get in, take that as a no, and then thank them for the reply.

Sounds good. Thank you.
