Sigh, I got waitlisted. I was really counting on getting an acceptance, and this sort of ruined my day.

Major: computer science
SAT I: 2280 (730M 750CR 800W)
SAT II: 800-MathII 780-Chem 750-Phys
UC GPA: around a 3.8
Essays were very unique.
ECs were decent.
Had straight As junior year, and have taken Honors/AP all of my life.

Now that I got waitlisted at UC Davis, do I even stand a chance at UCSD, UCLA, or Berkeley…? I’m really confused and disappointed here.

Hard to say whether out of state helps or not haha I would think so too, given the tuition thing. Very good SAT, SAT II’s don’t matter though yours are good, they won’t make or break anyone anymore. Could’ve been the EC’s? Or maybe you ranked low at a competitive school?

I honestly think you should’ve gotten into UCD (I’m a first year freshman here, I got in with a 4.05 UC GPA, 2020 SAT and a ton of ECs).

I wouldn’t give up on any other schools, or even on Davis! Admissions can be weird. You may well get into UCSD or UCLA. Berkeley is a different story but that goes for EVERYONE. Berkeley accepted like nobody for first quarter from my school my year, they gave like spring admission to 2 people. It’s a weird system in general.

@Mazorak This is indeed bizarre. Going only by your scores you should have ben a shoo-in. I can’t obviously comment on your essays, but with 750CR 800W in SAT it couldn’t have been bad.

Tuft’s Syndrome at UC? And worse still doing this to an OOS student? tsk…tsk…tsk…

I have exactly the same SAT with you athenisa… Maybe my GPA is lower because the courses in my Chinese high school is more rigorous. But I got waitlisted… Lol

It was because you’re out of state. Although they are trying to admit more out of state, the reality is that out of state applicants have a less chance to get in just because they’re much less likely to matriculate because of distance and tuition costs.

Wow. I’m sorry…admissions seems to be really weird. Your stats are great! I’m OOS too and applied to ucla and ucsd with a 2050 and ~4.4 (idk the exact UC gpa) so I don’t know…not expecting anything. My essays were really strong and my ec’s are pretty good but it does seem likely that because we are OOS, we’re less likely to attend. I am definitely in that boat. Wanted to apply to have backups (hello nicer weather…!) but don’t want to pay the tuition.

Most of the UCs use a sort of an “index score” to determine admission. Your actual numbers count for a lot of it, they give your essays a certain score and toss those in, ECs get a score and get thrown in, awards, honors, etc. get bundled in. It’s not a computer formula, but put together by the adcoms to more easily compare students.

I’m guessing your UC GPA might have hurt you… All colleges were really competitive this year, and if a 3.8 is your weighted GPA, that’s not too competitive at Davis. Not that it’s not wonderful, it’s just not that competitive for UCD.
