waitlisted: send in a letter to show continued interest?

i do want to send in a letter to tell them i really wanna go to duke. it probably won't help much, but i'll feel guilty if i don't try my best. what would you guys recommend i write for the letter?

and oh, i really SHOULD send it before March 31 shouldn't i? it's the day that all the Ivies announce their decisions, and sending the letter on that day would suggest that i'm interested only because i got rejected by the Ivies... that WOULD seem so fake.

I'm sorry to hear that, but I don't think a letter will help very much. Can't hurt though.

They won't even take note of the date.

Since you've accepted your position on the waitlist, they'll KNOW you're interested. They know everyone who accepts is interested.

Really, just step away from the admissions process and wait.

^^^ I would send the letter in, just in case. I did that after I got deferred from Uchicago, and it got me off the deferred block.

However, I would spend a lot of time crafting that letter. In my case, I felt that my letter of interest was actually more well written than my essays were lol.

i would definitely send a letter! I can't remember where and when this was, but I once read a statement of an adcom who said that they only considered taking those off the waitlist who sent in a letter reaffirming interest in the college.

Agree with Rister and CNI, Send in your letter. See if you can get another
teacher to write a letter on your behalf urging them to make you a
priority on their wait list to be admitted and enclose with the packet you
are sending. Send in additional awards listed on a separate sheet.

This year, there are going to be more admits from the waitlist for the simple
reason that there are quite a few students who would typically not
have pursued Duke but have done so due to the H,P early admittance
cancellation.

** Do not worry about the 3/31. **
In fact if you are admitted to Cornell/
Dartmouth it is very likely you would still want to go to Duke. Include
your admittances (assuming it is positive) as part of your letter. "I am
excited to ahve been admitted to blah but my heart lies strongly with
----"

:)

arwen15: wow, i like your thinking arwen! problem is i just have very little chance of getting in Cornell as an intl asking for fin aid. probably have a better chance at Dartmouth since they've turned need-blind. but anyway, yes i still like Duke more. nothing beats the Duke campus. Cornell is a tad too large, Dartmouth a tad too small and sleepy.

and i've just hit upon an idea: since i'm still worried about the 3/31 issue, i'll send my regional officer a very brief email before 3/31 stating that i want to be placed on the waiting list. just a primer to prove that i want Duke over all the other Ivies. then i'll enclose my longer letter, addressed to the same officer, with my Duke reply card. how about that?

wait do we have to tell Duke we want to be accepted on the waitlist?

yes, you have to use the reply card... thats what they said in the waitlist letter.

guys, what do you think of my idea in post #8?

The 3/31 thing doesn't matter AT ALL. They won't check your email/read your letter asap. They put it away and then come back to it until after May 1st because they first want to know how many admitted students will enroll and how many won't.

Last year my daughter's GC advised her to wait a few weeks before contacting adcom because they are getting a lot of emails and phone calls from students and upset alums now. Our daughter's GC did put a new packet together for her - spring semester interim grades, extra recommendation letters, and an updated letter from GC. The GC also made some phone calls to Duke on her behalf. She did get off the waitlist from Duke last year.

They rank the students on the waitlist.

If enough students do not matriculate at Duke and your number is reached, you're in.

Otherwise, you're not.

One letter will not affect your ranking position.

hm well, no matter, i've worked on my letter since march 25, 5 days now, and i've said all there is to say and covered every point i could think of. ive explicitly stated i will attend duke if offered a place and ive actually chased duke like i'd chase someone i like. hahaha

[Accidentally posted.]

On a related note, does anyone have a guess, compared to a regular year, as to how many people could be taken off the waitlist this year because of the change in a lot of schools' admissions programs?

there was a Chronicle article and I think it said ~50-75...

Class of 2012 to be Duke's most selective - News

Thanks. Also, in the past around when have waitlistees heard back from Duke concerning their admission decisions?

pretty much anytime after late april. i think all final decisions will be made by mid-july.
