So I was recently waitlisted from Stony Brook University (March 31). They are my top school and I really don’t have a backup that appeals to me. I was accepted into Hofstra U and Adelphi U, but I will end up with 75k+ debt after four years in contrast to ~30k at Stony Brook. I am wondering if I should email or contact the admission at Stony Brook, letting them know they are my #1 choice in order to help my chances of being pulled off the waitlist. Has anyone done this in the past? Will I come off as impatient if I do email them? I don’t want to hurt my chances of being accepted. Any feedback is appreciated.
P.S. The earliest they’ll start pulling people off the waitlist is Early May and the latest is end of June (graduation time :[ )
If you email, the best thing to say it is your top choice school and “if admitted I will attend” (assuming that is true). If your guidance counselor has any relationship with the school you might ask him/her to call on your behalf.
I would not take on that much debt for Hofstra or Adelphi. Perhaps consider starting at a CC and transferring to a state school.
@happy1 Thanks for your response.I will definitely ask my counselor about this, but he advised me to start at Suffolk Community College for 2 years and do the ‘Joint Admissions’ program with Stony Brook which offers guranteed acceptance as long as I maintain a 3.1 GPA.
I agree with Happy1. Have your counselor phone SB.
Even if the counselor doesn’t know anyone there in the admission office, they can still make a call that
lets SB know that you’re a very worthy student who is anxious to attend.
Even at the large, impersonal public schools, it can make more difference that one would think.
