If your daughter is interested, she should call to let them know, and see if they will share what her chances are. (It's not a good idea to draw conclusions from only one years data.)

Any recommendations as to what to do now that my D is not accepted to ANY school she applied to, but waitlisted at NYU, Richmond, Bucknell, and Scripps? Richmond said don't visit if you already have visited (she has). Anything we can do/submit that would help?
She has just applied to 2 other less selective schools she doesn't want to go to, but that have rolling admissions, just in case. But what can we do to get her into one of the schools she WANTS to go to? HELP! Anything that worked in the past?

I was told that Washington University in St. Louis infamously puts most of their qualified applicants into wait list, and actually addmits more students from the wait list than what from RD. The purpose of the practice is to improve yield. I searched Google but cannot find any addmission stats for Washington University in St. Louis, which is kind fishing.

worrieddad- why not have your D write to the admissions people - send a spiffier resume and any updates and let them know she will be thrilled to accept admission for sping semester (lots of schools are admitting kids in the spring, something new since my older D applied three years ago.) Have her write an articulate letter stating her case and commitment to attend. I'd write to them all, and maybe followup with an email with the same info. Anything your D can do to distinguish herself from the rest of the masses.

worriedDad - the four colleges you named all appear to use their wait list to fill their classes.

New York University (post#182 on page 10) took in 257 students from the wait list in 2003 6.1% of a class of 4219, in 2002 they admitted 190 students from the waitlist, 4.6% of a class of 4169.

University of Richmond (post#123 on page 7) took in 99 students from the wait list, 12.7% of a class of 782 in 2004. In 2003 however they admitted no one from the wait list and had a class of 845 students.

Bucknell University (post#117 on page 6) took in 46 student in 2003 from the wait list, 5% of a class of 906. In 2002 there were none from the wait list in a class of 917. In 2001 there were 81 admitted from the waitlist, 8.9% of a class of 913.

Scripps College (post#236 on page 12) took in 31 students in 2004 from the wait list, 15.3% of a class of 2003, In 2003 they took in 19 students, 9% of a class of 210.

joycell had some good suggestions, also your Daughters HS Guidance Counselor may have ideas on how to proceed.

Thanks again for your reply rich73cas. I've tried all the recommended links for Sarah Lawrence info and couldn't find anything, but I don't have access to US New and Reports details. My D is an amazing writer - really interested in screenwriting (TV and/or Plays) - but had a rough freshman year with honors geometry and an even rougher sophomore year with honors algrebra 2 and chemistry. As I said she's waitlisted at Sarah Lawrence and Emersom - performance arts/non acting, accepteted to Eugene Lang, Pratt and UT non Austin (it's a crazy Texas top 10% thing). S.L./Emerson were her #1. choices and now she's rethinking everything else and wants to go where her friends are going. (Places she hasn't even applied to and wouldn't have even considered in Jan.) Help - I don't want to push ... but she's such an amazing writer (and this school doesn't even have scriptwriting or creative writing as a major). Any info out there on Eugene Lang and/or Pratt's writing program would be more than appreciated as well as info on how to get off the waitlist and into the college.

anecdotally, out of 8 I know who applied to wash u, 2 got in and 6 got offered a place on the waitlist (none flat-out denied), so the list must be huge

If she hasn't visited already, it would be a good idea for her to visit the schools she was acceped in, meet professors and students and learn more about their programs.

At this point the focus should be on where she was accepted.
Unfortunately most wait list situations are long shots.

Having said that it can't hurt her chances to let the schools she was waitlisted at know that she is really interested in attending and provide them with updated information that supports her application. Her GC might be able to help.
