Waitlisted & the Statistical Chances of Getting In

thanks for the info on Trinity College in Hartford…why do you think the numbers vary so much from year to year?

eadwbd: It all comes down to the yield they achieve from regular admissions.
They apparently want a class of 550 to 575, so in years when the yield is low, they have to admit from the wait list to get up to that level.
The year they had a class of 609 they only took one from the waitlist.

Makes sense, but why does the yield vary so much? for example last year when Harvard took so many from their waitlist I would have thought the yield at a school like Trinity would have been down but it was the opposite…

I have a question! I am an international student from Vietnam. This year, Trinity Uni in Texas has already admitted 2 Vietnamese students with full need aid. Do I still have a chance when I am in the wait list?

Yield varies because of the dramatic increase in the number of applicants for each college and the larger number of institutions they each apply to. That and the trend away from Early Decision or Early Action will make college admission yields even more unpredictable in the future.

Harvard had just stopped offering Early Action - so they were conservative with their offers of admission in the Regular Decision round, with the intention of making greater use of the wait list to achieve their target class size without exceeding it.

When Colleges have an oversubscribed freshman class, students get tripled up in double rooms in the dorms, popular classes get closed out or overcrowded, so colleges try to minimize the risk of that happening. :)

Cornell University’s report on Undergraduate Enrollment Trends outlines Cornell’s strategy in using Early Decision, Regular Decision and the Wait List to achieve enrollment goals. http://www.dpb.cornell.edu/documents/1000423.pdf

Any stats on Tulane?

Hi chinablue

Here’s a link to a previous post on Tulane’s wait list

Here’s a link to prior year wait list stats.

Looks like they do use the wait list, but it varies greatly from year to year. It is difficult to predict what they will do in any individual case.
Good Luck :)

Swarthmore, please.
Thx

Some colleges use the waitlist if teacher/gc recommendations are glowing while they don’t think the same for students. They may also waitlist students if they are mentally unstable to avoid lawsuits.

university of minnesota?

Yale will be accepting very little if any waitlists this year because of their higher than expected yield.

Thanks a lot richs73cas! I just got into Stern last friday, really glad to get in. Thanks once again.

They seem to make use of the waitlist each year, Good Luck :)

2008 to 2004 CDS’s say only that they use a waitlist. They don’t list any details.

On the 2003 CDS This was posted.

Good Luck :)

I think everyone who used this thread owes thanks to Richs73cas for all the work he put in republishing these stats. My S and I found them very helpful. This was one place where you could get good FACTUAL information. The rest is just gossip…

Thanks for the kind words bristolstomp

richs73cas…thanks for all your help…I just was offered a place on Trinity’s extended waitlist…do you have any seperate statistics on extended waitlists?

The CDS’s do not make a distinction between a Wait List and an “Extended” Wait List, so I don’t have any additional stats on that.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/45272-waitlisted-statistical-chances-getting-34.html#post1062467395

But the fact that they are telling you there is still a chance, as we begin June seems to indicate that they think they will be using the Wait List this year.

The wide variation between Fall of 2007 - where Trinity College took almost 1/3 of the Freshman class from the wait list and Fall of 2008 and 2006 when they took single digits from the wait list - shows how inexact the “science” of college admissions is.

Good Luck :)

thanks richs73cas!
