The University of Pennsylvania – which offered waitlist spots to 2,800 people, an increase from 1,800 last year – says it calls a handful of candidates on the waitlist and their high-school counselors after May 1 to gauge the likelihood that students will accept offers. Last year, the school made such calls to the 42 students who were admitted from the waitlist, says Lee Stetson, dean of admissions. “When you go to the waitlist, you want to have students who really want to be here,” he says. “You don’t want to go through the selection process all over again.”

In recent years, the Penn admission office has also waitlisted comparatively fewer students than Princeton. Last year, about 1,000 Penn applicants were waitlisted, one-quarter of the number of students accepted, according to The Daily Pennsylvanian. The Penn admission office declined to release the size of this year’s waitlist.

The Admissions office accepted 162 transfer students and fewer than 100 students from the waitlist this year, according to Admissions Dean Eric Furda. The final yield - the number of students who accept an offer of admission - dropped to 62 percent, as compared with 63 percent in 2008.</p>

<p>In 2008, 170 students were accepted from the waitlist, a significant increase from the year before: only 65 were accepted in 2007.

Penn’s waitlist of 3,000 is one of the largest seen among peer institutions.</p>

<p>While Dean of Admissions of Eric Furda said the high number might make people step back and say “that’s too many,” only about 60 percent of those waitlisted will choose to remain on the list. This reduces the number to 1,800.</p>

<p>“The number is a function of the applicant pool and the class you ultimately want to enroll,” he said. He explained that while 1,800 may still seem large, two years ago Penn took 177 students off the waitlist. That’s 10 percent of the total number, a similar acceptance rate to the regular decision rate.</p>

<p>The University took approximately 100 students off the waitlist for the Penn class of 2013.

Macaulay Honors College is part of the CUNY system. Do you have any idea where I can look for info on the wait list at Hunter? I haven’t had any luck searching. Thank you for any help/advice!</p>

<p>Richs73cas, was looking at the published numbers for a friend for U Michigan. Seems like nobody off the waitlist for years and years except 525 in 2006. Seems rather strange to me - any thoughts on that? Could they be witholding info/distorting info?</p>
