It's that time of year again when colleges are going to start taking people off the waitlist, so I decided to make a thread for discussion related to the Williams waitlist!

Some questions to start off the discussion!

Who else was waitlisted and is hoping that they hear from Williams in the next coming months? What did you guys send to convince them to accept you off of the waitlist? Is williams your first choice?

For me personally, I just sent in a letter of continued interest detailing why I wanted to attend...pretty creative huh? Williams is my first choice school, but I'm content with the school I SIR'd to.

I was wait listed also! I guess it’s better than out right rejection.

For me, I sent in a letter of interest (attatched to an e-mail) providing reasons why I want to attend Williams, and how I would take full advantage of an admissions offer. I also updated them on a few more recent “achievements” (I won “best in category” in my high school science fair, and third place overall at the regional science fair. I was also a finalist for the Gates Millenium selection process). Also, my guidance counsellor called the Williams Office of Admissions on my behalf. It’s just a matter of waiting now.

Does anybody know how big the waiting list is this year?

Wow, you sure did put in a lot more work than I did…eeeek haha
I don’t want to get to specific for the sake of anonymity, but I sent my SIR to a top 20 LAC that is not Williams (obviously). What about you?

haha. I guess you can say that. It could be all for nothing. Do we even know for certain that Williams is pulling from their waiting list this year?
Oh, I understand. I sent my SIR to my state’s flagship school. It’s cheap, and a relatively prestigious institution. I’m counting on a sweet financial package if I’m accepted at Williams. So what are your interests major wise?

No, we don’t know for certain whether they will or won’t take any people off of the waitlist, but I’m seriously hoping they do. In the past it seems that they took off at least 10 people or so (which is a really small amount considering 500-600 people stay on the waitlist) so I expect that they will take at least a couple of people off.

My mind regarding aspirations/majors changes every day, so I have no clue what I want major wise. But as of now, I’m leaning towards the sciences/social sciences.

Yea, the chances of coming off the wait list are miniscule. Will we get notification if Williams decides not to use their wait list?
So why is Williams your first choice school? Why is your interest in Williams still so strong?

Best of luck to you all. Where ever you go, you will be wonderful and you will have a terrific four years, whether it is at Williams or elsewhere.

Beyond waiting for the tally of #s from the applicant pool, this is a really good school, so there will be people who have accepted who will undoubtedly accept HYP waitlist offers in Mid may, and that will likely open a few slots.
good luck to you all.

Hey all! I’m a current student (admitted of the waitlist as well). When you hear really depends. Some students who have committed to Williams will get off the waitlist at other places and change their minds. Others will decide to take a year off. So if you don’t hear by mid-may, fear not. There may still be space for you.

Yikes! I didn’t send anything in. I called around late may / early June asking if the waitlist was closed and got a call the next week letting me know that if I wanted a place, I had one.

I did an internship doing science-y stuff in between my junior and senior years of high school. That was a big deal to me, but I’m not sure what made me all that special. I imagine an admissions officer could shed more light on that situation.

Also, Williams’s newspaper had an article about students trying to get off the waitlist. It was a good read and it may give you some ideas (also, you might see what’s been done before).
Ephinephrine, it’s nice to hear that you got in off of the waitlist without doing much. I just sent them an email a couple of days ago letting them know that, although I already sent in my little card saying I still wanted to attend, I have a neuroscience research fellowship at a well-renowned laboratory this summer, and hopefully that will just again show them my dedication to neuro and cognitive science (which they have and Hamilton, where I’ve put down my deposit, doesn’t!). Now that I think of it…I probably could have added that - stressing that aside from being my top choice overall, they have a concentration I have my heart set on. Oh well, if I don’t get in to Williams, I still love Hamilton. It will be interesting to see, though!

This morning at about 7:15, right before my AP Calculus BC test, I got a call from my Williams regional admissions officer. I’m in!!!

Before anyone asks, I sent in a new letter of recommendation, a letter of interest, a comic book, and I emailed Williams yesterday reiterating my commitment. I can honestly say I’ve never been so happy in my life.

Was the comic book X-Men number one :)? Seriously, congrats, that is fantastic, I am sure Williams appreciated the creativity. It does seem like this will be a particularly tough year to get off the waitlist as Williams had an unexpectedly high yield, so it’s particularly impressive that they already accepted you, although it does sound like they will take a few internationals as five percent international is very low for Williams. On the other hand, 38 percent domestic students of color in the entering class is a record high (each of the past four years, that number has set a new record I believe, reflecting demographic trends among youth in this country):
