Waitlisted to GWU

I found out yesterday that I'm on the waitlist for George Washington. I'm disappointed, and just a little bit confused. I thought my scores were good enough, and I have already been accepted to several comparable schools with scholarships. Here are my stats:

Basic Stats
Class Rank: 9/450 when applied, now 10/450
GPA: 4.0 unweighted
I took 4 AP courses last year and 4 more this year.
SAT: 2240
SAT 2's: 780 Biology, 800 Math 2, 770 US History
National Merit Finalist

Activities
Tennis: member 4 years, varsity letter 2 years, captain senior year
Lacrosse: member 3 years, jv captain junior year
Spanish Club: member 3 years, vice president senior year
NHS: member senior year
Class Congress: member 3 years

My essays were quite strong. I am a generally good writer, and I had them looked over by my English teacher before I finalized them.

I visited GWU and took a tour, as well as going to an optional interview, which I think went quite well. I have tried to demonstrate strong interest in GWU, as it is one of my top schools.

If anyone has any insight as to what might have landed me on the wait list, please feel free to share. Also, would it be a good idea for me to call the admissions office and maybe try to find out some information, or would that be futile?
Thanks so much in advance!

You are overqualified for the school.

I don’t think that’s it. I know of another girl from my school who was accepted. She’s ranked around the same as I am, and she got into the Honors College.

I’m glad to see that it is not just me. I also thought I was going to get into G.W., get a scholarship, and maybe the Honors Program. I have similar stats to you and was really upset at getting waitlisted. I considered G.W. my safety school but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to go there. Perhaps they waitlisted people who they thought were not going to attend. Now that I think about it, G.W. was the only school where I applied to where they asked where else you were applying. I think it is wrong of them to try to read peoples’ mind to see where they want to go.

Yes, that is what I’m starting to think it is as well, which is completely unfair. I applied to Georgetown and Columbia, but even if I were to get in to these schools, I still would’ve most likely end up attending GW. The others are too expensive, and I liked the city atmosphere of GW. But I doubt that they offer merit aid off of the waitlist, so now I don’t know where I’ll end up.

Again, you’re not alone. I was quite confused and frankly a bit upset.

This is extremely disappointing. I feel like I’m getting punished for telling them I applied to Georgetown, Brown, Penn, Duke, and Northwestern. So if I don’t get into those schools (which there is a good chance I won’t) I would have happily gone to G.W. because I thought I would be getting some money. But now I’m going to be out of luck everywhere

Jeez, I know that GW is trying to make themselves ‘more selective’, but turning away academically qualified students seems to me like a poor way to go about it…

Yes, I completely agree axbmoore.

@ccfal196 & axbmoore, the same thing happened to me. I was also waitlisted, and I was kind of surprised. I looked at my school’s Naviance graph for GW, and I am well above the average GPA/ACT of students who have been admitted in past years. I interviewed and applied to the Honors Program, and I thought I had good chance of getting a scholarship. Please don’t take this the wrong way, but the thought of not getting in didn’t even cross my mind. However, I did apply for financial aid - and since GW isn’t need-blind and doesn’t guarantee to meet 100% of demonstrated need, that might be a reason.

This is the third school at which I’ve been waitlisted at. I’m not sure if anyone in the Admissions Office can tell us why we’ve been waitlisted, but I plan on calling all of my schools first thing Monday.

P.S. - Just some basic stats:

Class Rank: My school doesn’t rank, but I know I’m in the top 10%
GPA: UW - 94.9/100, W - 96.3/100
ACT: 36 (English - 36, Math - 35, Reading - 35, & Science - 36)
ECs: Boy Scouts (Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Troop Guide), Law Club (Photographer), Political Club, Model UN (Head Delegate), Recycling Club, Peer Tutoring
Awards: Eagle Scout, National Merit Finalist

@emaytay213 I’m planning on calling in as well. I know exactly what you mean about expecting to get in. I was completely blindsided by this, and I keep praying that it’s some sort of mistake (even though I know that it’s not).

I was also quite surprised.

I applied to the Elliot School for a 5 year Accelerated Program.

GPA: 3.75 WGPA: 4.52
Made the Top 25 Students of my graduating class based on WGPA.
SAT: 1970 (A bit low)
ECs: Pretty good
Essays: Average

Anyone think that I got wait listed because I applied to the Accelerated Program?
I noticed from some of my friends last year, that when you apply to a special program you might get rejected from the program, but you are accepted to the CCAS as an undecided or the other major you put on the GW application.

…I was wait listed for the whole University, in general. GW was my second choice :(

@ahans93 It was my second choice as well, and I applied to the Honors Program and was waitlisted to the whole school. I’m very upset.

I hope that, by some miracle, I get into Georgetown. If I do, then I don’t think I will even bother trying to get off of GW’s waitlist. I don’t mean that to sound cocky, I’m just saying that I am so frustrated at this point that if I get a better (albeit much more expensive) offer, then I don’t feel up to fighting to get in to a school that doesn’t value me as a student to begin with. So far my experiences with them have been nothing but positive, but this puts a bad taste in my mouth and makes me reconsider how much I really want to attend. I feel like I’ve been wronged.

@ccfal196 I’m hoping for exactly the same thing! I waiting for Georgetown’s letter as well, and at this point it’s definitely my first choice school. I can relate to how you’re feeling; it’s happened to me three times! While I know that I technically still have a chance to get into and attend any of those schools, I’m already finding myself unconsciously excluding them from my options. If I do get in to any of those schools, I know I won’t be able to help feeling as if the school were saying: “Well, some of the students we actually wanted to attend didn’t choose us, so we’ll take you instead.” It’s the “instead” part about it that hurts, I think.

@emaytay213 Yes, that’s exactly how I feel too! I’m sort of ruling out GW as an option at this point, even though all of my friends and family are telling me not to write it off yet. It sucks to feel unwanted, especially by a school that I love so much, but knowing that there are other people going through the same thing definitely helps. And good luck look with Georgetown! I heard letters came out around this time last year. I’m so nervous.

@ccfal196 Yeah I heard letters were sent yesterday, and I’m pretty sure they were sent on a friday for EA too because I got my deferral the monday before the official decision date. Good luck to you too!

Sent from my SCH-I500 using CC App

@ccfal and emaytay
Georgetown is my top choice too! If I don’t get into Georgetown, I will most likely go to NYU. They gave me a full cost of attendance financial aid package…even though it’s mostly loans. There’s no point following up with GWU because they release decisions for wait listed applicants after the May 1 enrollment date for all my other colleges. GWU is essentially off my list now.

Is it just a coincidence all of us applied to Georgetown? From what I’ve heard from a few students at G.W. they tend to dislike the kids from Georgetown

I knew that there was some rivalry between the schools, but applying to one definitely shouldn’t preclude your admission into another. That’s just so petty and unfair.

Right now I’m just trying to look at the bright side. If I was waitlisted for this reason, for putting down that I’m applying to Georgetown, at least that means that people in GW admissions think I have a decent shot of getting into there. That’s slightly reassuring, I guess.

Were your “Why GW” essays very GW-centric? Last year, there was a lot of conjecture here that putting down a load of Ivies plus Gtown in the “where else did you apply” question, and then submitting an essay about how much you’d like to study in DC, was the kiss of death. Probably people should not answer the “where else” question 100% honestly.
