Waitlisted to UCSD....Any chance at UCLA??

I've recently been waitlisted at UCSD, which sucks but I guess is better than a rejection.
Does this completely rule out any hope at being accepted by UCLA (my #1)? Any feedback is appreciated.... but I guess
I'll have my answer by the end of this week....

So far I've been accepted to SDSU, CSULB, CSUSM, and USD.

W GPA: 4.1
UW: 3.8
SAT: 1850
Lots of EC:
ASB 2 year member- Junior Class President and ASB Vice President
NHS and CSF Member
Miss Teen of my city- represented as an ambassador and worked closely with the mayor and our chamber of commerce
Acting at a local theatre

Pretty strong essay detailing my life as a refugee from war-torn Kosovo.

Well purely academically UCLA is a pretty high reach for you. They are the most applied to school in the nation (according to US news and world reports) and have a tendency to reject kids who end up getting into schools like Berkeley, UIUC, etc.

They are independent decisions. If UCSD accepted 30% of people with your stats and UCLA accepted 10% of people with your stats, you could be accepted by UCLA and not UCSD, yes. It happens. UCLA is a reach, but it is a reach for everyone, since they turn down top stats, too. I wouldn’t say it was ‘likely’, but it would just be one of those things that sometimes happens if you got into UCLA but not UCSD.

I got waitlisted by UCSD with a 2220 SAT and a 4.1 W GPA and what I consider to be pretty decent essays and it’s disappointing, but I’m going to wait on UCLA and UCB before I get upset over it.

I think historically, UCSD’s application review process has been more numbers-based than has UCLA’s and UCB’s, although I believe they have switched over from the point system to holistic review. Here is an overview of their review process, found on their website:

http://admissions.ucsd.edu/freshmen/eval-process.html

Even in recent years, though, I’ve seen a number of very qualified students be wailtisted/rejected by UCSD and there has been some speculation as to whether or not it tends to accept “fit” students over students who are likely to be applying to the school as a safety because of their stats.

Naturally, UCSD isn’t going to actually say that it takes this into consideration. A lot of it is probably just me wanting to think that I meet UCSD’s standards even though I was waitlisted. This was really a wakeup call to me; the UCs are quite selective in general, and UCSD is among the more selective ones.

UCLA is very competitive, but don’t think that it’s impossible for you to be admitted. You’ll just have to wait and find out.

I wish I had stats and reliable sources to back all of this up, but it seems like the details of UCSD’s application process are pretty elusive, so this is really just my observation.

Thank you for the responses, I appreciated them all for what they are worth!
