I was waitlisted then "released" last year from columbia. I'm currently at a fairly competitive school (30% admit rate) but I'm not too happy with the atmosphere and classes, so I'm looking to transfer. Does anyone know if Columbia gives special preference to people that were waitlisted, or will this be a non-factor?

columbia certainly takes into account that it previously read your file and deemed you close. so in that regard i can’t say it is a preference per se, but it certainly will add to their reading of you. i mean a simple example: if you were a student that was straight rejected and reapplied, you might not be looked at the same way.

regardless of whether you applied or not, they’d like to see that you’ve done something in your first year - become involved, continued your intellectual and other passions.

best of luck in your application.
