@holdingouthope thank you very much! good luck to your family, as well. The next (and probably last) wave of offers should be coming out within the next two weeks. This information from admissions; They specifically said “late May”.
Well, if it’s any help, I will be declining my Michigan offer. Would like to have gone, but couldn’t justify the costs against my state flagship’s honors program.
Good luck to all still waiting! (And even if you don’t get off the waitlist, if you’re OOS you’d probably save a boatload of money. Or for anyone who doesn’t get off the waitlist, you’ll be fantastic wherever you go .)
I am waitlisted since ED deadline. Applicant for LSA, IS, 1380, 4.0 UW All AP’s, Honors, leadership, charity ect… My Father just spoke with my regional admissions counselor “AC”. He asked him if there was anything we could do to improve our chances of getting an offer. Answer, “No”. When he told the AC that I was heartbroken the response was an awkwardly long silence which I’m sure was accompanied by an eye roll. When asked if he advocated for me the AC’s response was, “Her continued interest was noted”. This admissions counselor was very unprofessional, bordering on rude. Is it really a wholistic approach to reviewing applicants? We are all just numbers to them. They are overworked and see us as drags on thier time and daily chores. If we do get in we will be in large classes taught by TA’s who speak english as their third language. We will probably get the worst living quarters and treated like second class citizens. #FMichigan! I’m going somewhere I’m wanted and recognized for my achievements! (I may start a separate post with the title “FMIchigan” if anyone else is interested in venting)
^ First, there is no ED at Michigan and it does not make sense to be waitlisted since EA or RD deadline either. Second, one should not put much hope on WL anyway. It is just a way to fill the remaining seats in case the yield rate is lower than they expected. If you look at the past record, the percentage of students got off WL at UMich is very low. Lastly, there is really nothing you can do other than expressing your continued interest. And for that, it may be better by e-mail. I can imagine how annoying it is receiving similar phone calls.
Sorry, Deferred EA and then waitlisted. The same AC failed to respond to two of my emails as well.
MI made 4.5 million dollars just on application fees. 3.5 million on waitlisted and rejected applicants. You’d think they could hire more admissions counselors so they could have more time to be professional. Such behavior in any other profession would get you fired. You would be annoyed because of legitimate questions about a pending application? Maybe you’ve got a future job at MI admissions.
You paid an application for them to file your records, review your application, repsonse to your email and phone calls. It does not matter how many they reject or accept or waitlist as they need to go through the process for each of them. You can say the same thing for any schools with low admission rate. They obviously have spent a lot more time on you than the other 58000 applicants. If each applicant sent a couple email and make one phone call, no wonder it would take them longer than they expected to finish the review process.
This entire process is a mystery. What I know is that my regional admissions counselor did not respond to any of my emails and it was clear that he had regrets even answering the phone. I am one of 58,000 applicants and I understand his failure to respond is related to lack of time. However, it’s my singular future and he is my contact with the University. He made me feel unwanted by not giving me the courtesy of a response and an honest answer to my questions. If I’m a so called qualified candidate you would think he would prioritize. I have seen other posts noting substantive answers from other AC’s. Maybe it’s a “one bad apple” scenario.
Are you an admissions counselor? I noticed you have been on here since 2012 and posted over 15,000 times.
Why are you so concerned?
Jeez, take it down a notch. Billscho is trying to help and I’m starting to see why your admissions counselor was less than enthusiastic about helping you. You are not entitled to any special consideration. The University straight out tells waitlisted and deferred applicants that they prefer not to receive any additional information. Do you really think your interest in attending Michigan is greater than any of the other 58,000 applicants?
I’m the farthest from entitled but common courtesy is expected. Even if you and I disagree I want to thank
you for your response.
@Ruta - understand your concerns and feelings. Getting deferred, then waitlisted, then waiting forever - is agonizing. Perhaps the AO could have been more polite to you, but not knowing what was spoken - none of us on CC can comment either way. And any comments here is not going to help your situation anyways.
Good that you have decided to move on. Guess the CC post was just to “let the steam out”.
Having gone through the arduous admissions process, we all know that this is not a scientific process - there are no magic wands - there are no guarantees - and perhaps no logic either.
@Ruta, you have every right to be disappointed, but admissions to highly selective schools like Michigan is not a predictable process. There are many more “qualified” applicants than admissions slots at Michigan, so thousands who have the objective stats will get waitlisted or denied. The admissions counselor was giving an honest prognosis, even if he did not have a good “bedside manner”. The fact that the phone call came from a parent, rather than the applicant, likely did not help. Based on your other posts, it looks like you will be going to DePauw, which is a very good LAC. Good luck.
@dtrain1027 Thanks for the reply. I still believe that professionalism dictates different behavior by my MI AC. I advocated for myself and expressed my continued interest twice by email. One email after being deferred and one after being waitlisted. My father called once. We were respectful and the officer was rude and non-responsive. If he would have been honest and said that I was not the most qualified candidate in his waitlist pool that would have been different.
Yes, I’ve committed to DePauw University and I’m excited. My other choices were: MSU, Bucknell,Oberlin, Kenyon, Davidson and Hope. On a whole, the admissions officers at each of these schools showed a level of professionalism that should be expected out of every school regardless of size. (Compare MI v MSU and the admissions officers responsiveness was like the difference between night and day)
With merit and grant aid the cost at DePauw will be half of what in state tuition is at MI. It is a nationally ranked top 50 liberal arts college and I’m also playing basketball there which I never would have done at MI.
Good luck with everything.
So I was waitlisted and I had a conversation with my reginal officer a couple of weeks ago. I asked if I should write the admissions office a letter expressing my interest in the school, he said he would not recommend it because he did want me to ‘irritate’ anyone. However, as I was reading this thread I found that several people suggested that a letter be written especially to express the fact that if admitted from the waitlist, I would for sure attend the university ( which is true for me because U of M has been my dream school since the seventh grade). So I wanted to ask all of you what your thoughts were. Should I write the letter? If so what should I write/include in it? Did writing a letter work for you or someone you know? Who should I address the letter to?
Thanks and have a nice night
@daw0731 They would have already offered you admission if they were going to. If you haven’t got an offer off the waitlist yet it’s just a delay for your rejection at the end of June.
@daw0731 i sent two letters to my regional counselor after being waitlisted which both included that i would 100% attend if admitted and other achievements i wanted them to know and i was admitted off the waitlist
@cactus1 when did you send the letter and when did oh recieve admission? And should I write to my regional officer or to someone in the office in Ann Arbor?
@APlennox how are you sure?
@daw0731 i sent one right before may 1st and then another one later that week just because i had received another award to add and i was accepted on may 6th. they were both to my regional counselor
I think people did not realize the difference between deferred from EA to RD and being on the waitlist. After deferred from EA, your application will be evaluated in the RD cycle with other candidates. For that, you may submit additional information and do whatever trying to improve your chance. After the RD cycle, they have finished reviewing all applicants. The only thing they want to know is if you want to remain on the waitlist. If not, they would simply remove your name. They already have a priority rank on the waitlist and there is no further evaluation. It is not another round of application process. If you got admitted from the WL, it is simply because you appeared on the top of the list. It is not a lucky draw or they would keep changing the order since you do something. They just want to finish the task as soon as possible.
@billcsho - according to UMich CDS - they DO NOT rank their wait list.
