Waitlisted vs Differed?

What’s the difference? I was differed ED. I know some schools have waitlists. Is “differed” just Duke’s word for “waitlisted”? Do I need to do something to be placed on the waitlist, to still be considered for admission? I would still like to be considered for admission - I’m sending a letter of continued interest in soon.

The wait list is created after regular decisions are made. The next decision you get will be accept, reject, or wait list.

If you are put on the wait list you are not accepted but your status may be changed to accept if certain things happen. Most applicants put on the wait list at a place like Duke are ultimately rejected. Hope this helps.

deferred is being sent to the next round. pretty much, duke figured you were a strong applicant, but kind of borderline. so they want to compare you to a larger pool to see where you stand. they will reevaluate you with all the RD apps.

  • Deferred

They’re not the same thing. Being deferred means that your application will be reevaluated in the regular decision round. Being placed on a wait-list means that Duke will consider admitting you only if the desired number of students don’t matriculate.

It’s not unique to Duke at all. It’s standard terminology at all ED/EA schools. Not being aware of it, or able to spell it properly, frankly does not create a positive impression. I would make sure that your letter of continued interest does not portray you in this way.

Keep in mind that unlike many other top schools, Duke actually rejects/accepts more students than they defer!

^ Duke rejected 57% of all ED applicants, and deferred only 19% this year.

There are actually several different waitlists at Duke. See Rachel Toor’s book for more details. But basically there are WL1, WL2 and WL3. Only the admissions people who can see the breakdown. But only those on WL1 have any chance of getting in.

The deferral pool is only offered after ED. You may or may not end up on one of the waitlists. Just hope for the best. Good luck

The OP is confusing between differ and defer. Please look up a dictionary.
