Waitlisted - What to do next?

Hey guys!

I have been waitlisted from my top choice university - The University of Michigan - and I would like to know what my next steps should be. I plan to pay my enrollment deposit at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Also, how do I improve my standing on the waitlist? Is there some way to show to them that I should be the person that they should take out first from the waitlist?

Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

The main thing colleges want to know is would you attend if you were given a spot off the waitlist? If yes, then let them know that. But it might have more to do that a Russian major decided not to come, so they want to find another Russian major.

@bopper That’s a massive issue for me. I am a computer science major and everyone LOVES computer science.

But I don’t think Michigan admits via major. They admit to school (college of engineering) directly. They ask you for some majors that you are interested in on your application that’s it.

You may want to check out the waitlist stats from previous years. There may be 1000 waitlisted and only a handful accepted. So…plan on going to the favorite who accepted you. Next steps…Follow up letter to your admissions regional representative expressing your commitment and preparedness to enroll. Identify any new info such as awards, updated test scores, etc. If acceptance is not contingent on aid/scholarships, tell them you are in for the full MSRP.

@IBstudentDad Yeah getting in from the waitlist seems highly unlikely. Also, should I send a handwritten letter or would an email suffice?

I heard they don’t even read the letters sometimes

@IBstudentDad‌

Could you please expand MSRP?

MSRP = manufacturer’s suggested retail price – it’s a joke. This is usually the full price on goods and services. Poster #3 suggests (if you can) to tell UMich that you’re willing to pay full tuition in order to make yourself more attractive.

@T26E4 Well. Since I am an international student who didn’t ask for aid, I thought that was a given?

Poster #3 does not know your particulars. GL

UWisc is a fantastic school and the town (Madison) is consistently ranked one of the BEST college towns in the USA – you’ll do great there (or UMich or wherever).

@T26E4 How come Madison beats other College Towns despite being a Tundra?

While my college life would be good, I am more afraid that I would end up working in the Tundra rather than at beautiful California.

You’re seriously mis-informed about Madison WI. I’ll leave it for you to research.

UWisc attracts national level employers due to the prominence of its programs. The people who choose to remain in Wisc do so because they’re drawn to stay.

@T26E4 Thanks for all your help! I truly appreciate it
