"Please complete and mail the enclosed card by April 16th to confirm you continuing interest in Swarthmore."
What does this "card" mean? I got waitlisted and all I got was a thin consideration letter.
Do I have to write a letter that I am still interested in Swarthmore?

They want to know if you want to stay on the wait list. Send the card back if you do want to remain on the wait list. If you are really still interested in Swarthmore, you should send them a letter in a month updating any new info about awards you may have received, and re-stating your interest in the school, saying that’s it’s your first choice, if it is.

If Swarthmore is truly your first choice and you would enroll if you were accepted, you might also ask your school counselor to get in touch with them and let them know you would enroll if offered a place in the class of 2015.

Is the card the letter I got from them??

you should have got a card to return to them in your letter, double check your envelope and where you opened it, then give Swarthmore a call if you don’t find it, they can probably get you another one or manually add you to the waitlist.

tomathist,
Sorry, I must have mis-read/misunderstood your question. If you are sure that you did not receive a card in the envelope in addition to the letter, please call the Admissions Office on Monday and tell them that you do not have a card to return.

thanks guys and I’m sorry that I didn’t address the question more specifically haha;;

Any suggestions how to get admitted from the wait list? D is still hoping to attend despite a wait list letter today.

This is totally anecdotal, so please check with other people, too.

A friend of mine got off the wait list last year. I’m pretty sure she contacted her regional admission officer a few times, asking what her next step should be, reiterating why Swat was her number one choice, and committing there if removed from the list. She also sent in additional recommendations from guidance (though as a caveat, I suspect my guidance department may have slightly more pull than the average school’s) and from a teacher at our school who’s a Swarthmore alum and is famed around here for her finesse when it comes to writing recs.

I obviously don’t mean to say you need to find a Swarthmore alum or that you need a special guidance department. I just thought it would be fair to mention it. Good luck to everyone!

According to Swarthmore’s Common Data Set, there were 7 applicants admitted from the waitlist last year. In the prior 3 years the numbers admitted from the waitlist were 34, 42 and 26. The implication I draw from this is that Swarthmore will very likely go to the waitlist, but the number taken from the waitlist could range from very small to almost 10% of the incoming class.

approximately how many people are put on the waitlist?
