2280 SAT (800 V, 720 M, 760 W)
SAT 2: 790 Lit, 760 US History
GPA: 3.7 UW, 4.05 W (I underachieved, but took 8 APs in all)
Really good essay
Great great recs (my college counselor, who was my english teacher last year, adores me and helped me to become a much better writer)
I’m a white male from Florida so that might be a weakness.

4 years of water polo, 10 years of piano, 3 years of jazz band where I play lead piano, abroad summer programs in Thailand, Vietnam, India, and China (where I took intensive Mandarin). I also have been very into photography. Also have several writing awards from my school and National Merit Finalist. Also, volunteered at a Best Buddies Camp for specially abled youth past two summers.

This has been brutal…
I’ve been waitlisted by:
Bates, Bowdoin, Middlebury, and Wesleyan
Rejected at Pomona, Amherst, and Williams.

I’m 1 for 8 (got accepted at Kenyon).

Whats going on? My counselor advised Bates as a sort of safety school for me …

Overall, I think that your stats were good enough for each of the schools on your list but you really didn't have any clear "safety" schools in the group. All of them are very similar, high quality LAC's. I question the advice provided by your guidance counselor, who may have been asleep at the switch this year. I am sure that you must be very disappointed but I can assure you that Kenyon is an excellent school. It is a great school that produces very well-rounded graduates. I wish that my S had decided to go there when he was accepted back in 2006.

yeah, I got into Emory and Kenyon so its a choice between either.

She's a great guidance counselor and she warned me I had no clear safeties. But after applying ED Amherst and getting deferred, she urged me to take a school ED2 and I declined thinking I'd get in several of the aforementioned schools...no go.

I am pushing my hardest to get to the top of those waitlists, doing whatever I can, but this year is the hardest year for college admissions...there is not too much i can do...

If anyone has advice/consolation/anything, PLEASE share!

Wow seriously?? That is so odd. I was accepted at Bates this year and my scores were...nowhere near yours, honestly. My Sat was 2020 (CR: 620, Math: 680, Writing: 720). SAT 2: 720 Math, 630 U.S. Hist.
My GPA is around 3.90 with 8 AP classes total. I played JV tennis for 2 years, Symphony orchestra for 3 years. President of Japanese Club for 2 years. National Honor Society, Link Crew for two years each.
But I'm an Asian female from Washington state, which is a plus..I think.
I don't understand how admissions worked out this year. Many outstanding students did not get into good schools while a lot of students who were less qualified got in...
Many surprises this year..

I think you should look at Emory and Kenyon as the great choices they are. I think Kenyon in particular is an outstanding LAC.

Unless you are really in love with one of your waitlisted schools I would focus on the two you are in. If you really prefer one or all of the waitlists then chose one of your accepted schools and express your "love" to the WL places.

Is there a particular area you are interested in? That might help you decide which to focus on.

just wondering, how did you answer the "why do you want to go to bates" question? was it too general? (could you have recycled that essay for another college?)
did you go on an interview?
i know those two things are extremely important aspects of your application.

Hey, it's pretty funny but I also got into Kenyon as well as into Bates. It was an extremely hard decision, but I decided to go to Bates. Hope I made the right choice!

Your stats are fantastic. Maybe its a money issue. Bates guarentees to meet your financial need if they accept you--did you need a lot of aid? My daughter was accepted with lower stats but no financial aid application.
BTW-my husband and I are Emory alums-great school, great town. Well endowed, lots of great new things happening there. You should really check it out.

Tufts Syndrome. They didn't think you'd come.

And schools are about the fit. They may think you are too dynamic for their student body.

Schools do NOT just take the kids with best stats.

BTW: You do sound like an amazing candidate. Sorry you did not have more success in college admissions.

And it's not the Why Bates? essay. My S was rejected at Bates after visiting and being interviewed. His best friend was accepted. His friend never stepped foot on campus and only applied because he told him too

However, it's all good. S is so happy at Williams.

i was waitlisted with a 34/3.93 :)

anyone heard from the waitlist?
