Just as a possible general explanation, but it’s possible that I’m just trying to sort out why I got waitlist’d. Anyways, I think they’ve created a tight margin for admitted applicants, in others words, “fit” students. With the current economic crisis in the university system, I believe need to meet a quota from the incoming 2016 class tuition, so, by admitting as many “fit” students as they can, the university can ensure they meet the quota. If they admitted too many overqualified candidates, apart from the Regents scholarship recipients, they may face under-enrollment. Of course, there will be those that are under-qualified as well. Just my two cents. Please don’t be offended if you did get in and congrats!

Well i did some research and found that in 2010: NO freshman applicants were accepted off the UCSD waitlist. In 2011: Either All of them/ Majority of them were accepted off the UCSD waitlist

^^^@Shirafune: we worried about that, too. But son was admitted this morning with single sitting SAT = 2300, 4.3 GPA/4.1 UC GPA + Eagle Scout. So I am not sure that the principle of ‘over’-fit is at work at UCSD.

I, for one, am astounded at how well qualified the wait-listed applicants are here. Many are absolutely stellar. I can’t imagine what is going on.
