I have just been waitlisted by SMU and I am stunned!

My stats are as follows:

SAT= 2200 (800 verbal, 730 math, 670 writing)
Grades= 3.5 unweighted GPA
Courses= 1 AP (US history), two years at a local college
Recs= good
Essay= okay
Extracurriculars= not a star, but I participated in golf, academic team, newspaper, and politics
Work experience= very good

What happened? Has anyone had a similar experience? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

did you check off the box that said "you have recently been convicted of a felony and/or arrested" b/c otherwise i dont know how that woulda worked. there musta been some glitch in your app. i would look into it. b/c with those #'s alone i think u should be pretty much a shoe in. my #'s were less than u. my extras were a lil more. but i think u shoulda been more than fine.

you should have been ushered in. i would definitely check into it. i think the admissions office is closed for spring break though. do whatever you need to get into smu. dallas employers are EXTREMELY loyal to smu grads.

I contacted my SMU admissions counselor and asked why I had been waitlisted. The reason? According to them, I had only completed 16.5 credits through my junior year in high school (lower than the normal 17 or 18 credits for an applicant). However, my transcript says that I have completed 19 credits through my junior year! How did they miss that? Besides, when did the number of credits taken become an important admissions factor. If you are going to graduate, isn't that enough? I have tried to speak with my counselor about this mistake, but I haven't heard from him in days (I've left several messages and emails).

david..., perhaps there are some subjects that are on your transcript that you consider credit that SMU does not. Many schools do not count grades from music, athletics, etc. in the GPA configuration, and our district does not consider them towards graduation credit. It may be a definition issue as to what is a core course. Definitely follow up on it and make your case.

Thanks everyone for your support. I have been in contact with a couple of SMU representatives recently, however, I still remain on the waitlist.

Alongfortheride, yes, SMU does calculate their GPA differently (more on that in my next post).

they can be picky on who they want. If you really want to go----write a letter to the Admissions Commitee.
They will see your interest and let you in. Although, be prepared to go without any scholarships/fin aid from SMU.
