My nephew was waitlisted :-(...anyone have any stats on the chances to get in? He is instate. Does anyone know a student who has ever gotten in after being waitlisted?

Last year, out of 1125 on waitlist, 249 accepted. Two years ago, 1671 waitlisted, 209 accepted.

The odds ain't good.

Lets post waitlisted stats for comparison

OOS
2160 sat
6 aps
3.75 uw GPA

OOS
2210 SAT
6 APs
93 uw GPA

Those aren't terrible odds, seeing as some schools never even take a single person off the waitlist.

OOS
2220 SAT
34 ACT
7 AP's
97% we don't do GPA

Oh, well I'm definitely not wasting my time on a school that doesn't want me.

OOS
2150 sat
32 act
8 ap's
4.3 wgpa

I'm in at Michigan and UT. Still wait on UCB and UVA.

OOS, legacy
1310/ 1960 SAT
27 ACT (taken once)
6 aps
4.4 wgpa

kind of a ridiculous amount of EC's

goldnjet2, we're kind of in the same boat.
i'm waitlisted at unc, in at ut and waiting on uva as well (deferred ed).

rated pilot-I don't think your information is correct. This comes from the common data set for the 2005-2006 Freshman class at UNC directly from the school:

http://www.ais.unc.edu/ir/cds.html

Common Data Set 2005-06 UNC-Chapel Hill

C2. Freshman wait-listed students (students who met admission requirements but whose final admission was contingent on space availability)
Do you have a policy of placing students on a waiting list? Yes
If yes, please answer the questions below for fall 2005 admissions:
Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list 1,689
Number accepting a place on the waiting list 1,585
Number of wait-listed students admitted 7
Is your waiting list ranked? NO

As you can see, only 7 students were admitted from the wait list according to the school own information. I believe that like many schools, UNC accepts way more than they can handle and very few are admitted from the waiting list.

**Sorry, I see your numbers are for 2004-2005. What a difference a year makes!

yeah, i feel like unc is getting pretty good at predicting who will enroll.

i think the basketball championship could have boosted enrollment last year.

THe stats that you all are referencing...are they combined in state and oos? Does anyone have them broken out?

SoccerGrl:

I think you're probably correct. I had actually heard a rumor that no one was accepted off the waitlist last year, but I can believe it was only 7. Though I don't know the stats on other years, I think last year was unusual for taking so few off the waitlist. They had many more acceptances than they'd anticipated. But, as you say, I suspect the basketball championship boosted the enrollment some last year.

I don't believe the common data set breaks down in state and out of state students. Do remember that UNC can only accept 18% out of state students, so if that quota is filled with regular decision students, you will not see many OOS waitlist students enter the class. That said, I do know of two OOS students that were admitted off of the wait list during 2004-2005.

Keep your fingers crossed!!

Here's where I got my info:

It came with the waitlist decision letter.

I think the information in that link may be from 2004. For some reason, I can't seem to cut and paste here, but if you go into UNC-CH news archives, there's an excerpt dated June 27, 2005, which states that they were not going take anyone off of the waitlist last year (2005). As mentioned before, though, this year may be closer to what happened in 2004 and earlier.

It is interesting that UNC decided to send waitlisted people the older stats rather than the more recent and more discouraging stats from this year. They do say that they have no way of predicting who will accept and reject admission, but the new data seems to suggest they're getting better at it.

ratedpilot:

I'm guessing that if the waitlist information you received is from 2004, that's because they suspect this year will be closer to the stats for 2004, than to what happened last year. (Just a guess.) As soccergrl pointed out, last year may have been unusual, because of the basketball championship. Will be interesting to see, though. Good luck.

Yeah, I think they are expecting 2004 matriculation rates. Looking at the older data, you can see that last year was definitely an outlier. I don't think they wanted to send last year's data because then people might think it is hopeless and not accept a place on the list.
