I just got waitlisted and wonder if anyone knows if kids ever get in Swarthmore and off the waitlist.
Swarthmore was not my first choice, but I was hoping to have it as an option. Maybe my "Why Swat" essay did me in, as it was not incredibly passionate. Anyway anyone have an opinion?
Thanks

yeah, same thing happened to me. To be honest, I threw in my application at the last minute. My recs arrived a few days after the deadline. I never visited, and frankly was expecting to be flat-out rejected. congrats to those who got in, and to my fellow wait-listees, don't worry, I won't be taking a spot on the list.

Bubblewrap while it varies from year to year, I wouldn't get your hopes up. My son was waitlisted last year and hung on desperately for six weeks-sending in letters, new recs etc. They ended up not taking him. Although we found out later that they did take 18.
I think your time is better spent on your other schools.

Thanks for the advice, Andi. And I feel better knowing that there are MIT-accepted kids amongst us Swarthmore rejects.

Yup, don't feel bad. Interestingly when my son went to do an overnight last fall, he ended up being hosted by a kid who HAD gotten off that same waitlist. The kid boasted of having drunk 20 shots the previous Saturday and THEN he broke the hosting rules and left my son for two hours to go drinking.
So whatever. I guess schools don't always make the right choices :)

I am a prospective science and math major for colleges, and I'm terrible at writing and english stuff. I got rejected from MIT and accepted at Swarthmore. Do you think they just pick names from a hat to decide who's in?

Conan:

Sometimes they probably use the hat! But, not always. See my post on the "2nd time is a charm" thread about "slots" and the luck of the draw.

Your case makes sense. MIT gets a million math and science applicants. Swarthmore doesn't get as many, but still has a bunch of "math, science, and engineering" slots. If you have "a math or engineering" application, you are going to be in a smaller pile of applications at Swarthmore than at MIT. Strong application. Swarthmore needed to fill "your" slot. MIT didn't.

LOL Well Conan-- ya just never know. Maybe they use the Sorting Hat !!

I got waitlisted too. My first non-acceptance. I'm kind of sad, but I'll fill out the card that says I still want to be considered and hope for the best.

maybe that's key. Swat has loads of humanities types and could be happy with a few who are likely going to stay with the sciences. My son likes humanities and has good writing skills--- maybe MIT needed a few more like him. ??? who knows.

sorry vastango. My advice, if you've got other options you like, is to send in the card and then forget about it. Celebrate your admits and focus your energy on making a good choice among them.

Also my first non acceptance.....

I was waitlisted. I am in at U Chicago (and other places) plus waiting on Brown so I won't accept a place on the Swat waitlist. I applied as a bio/pre-med but with strong interests in theater, creative writing, and Jewish studies. The letter said they had 4,900 applications for 370 spots so maybe they accept around 900 or so??? In this crazy situation, who knows why one person is accepted and another not?

My brief stats (to help people looking next year): SAT I, 1510/2260,; 96.5 UW gpa; SATII- 780,770,720 plus all the normal good stuff.....

Best of luck to everybody still waiting. And for the rest of us, it will all work out.

Yikes.

That is a 20% increase over last year, which was already the second highest number of apps they had ever had.

That would put the acceptance rate down around 18% -- the lowest in the school's history (or least as far back as 1970). The previous low was 20% for the fall 1998 freshman class.

Also waitlisted...2360 SAT (760 W), 1/246, 4.0 UW, 800, 750, 720 IIs, awesome recs+essays

Will hold out on waitlist :(

Waitlisted.

i haven't heard yet! ... that can only mean one thing...

the mail is sl-o-o-o-o-w

Oh my. :(
There is no hope for me.

Waitlisted but I'm totally cool with it. I just found out that I got into Northwestern so that cheered me up a bit! Have hope guys, there's a place for all of us to succeed and be happy. I haven't found it yet (still waiting on a few more schools) but yeah, keep the faith haha :).
