54 ppl were admitted from the waitlist

that was last cycle, but the number fluctuates wildly from year to year, so don't get your hopes up (or down, for that matter).

yeah, there have been yrs when they didn't resort to the WL at all

cool2bars, I don't know if it's true at Columbia. But realistically (as in: I'm surprised I was waitlisted and not flat-out rejected and haven't cured cancer since my midyear report so I don't think I'll be pulled), Barnard's pretty high up on my list, so there's a good chance I'll still be in Morningside Heights for four years.

columbia is not in harlem, its in morningside heights. there is a george carlin monolog in which he talks about growing up in morningside heights but it sounds too sissy for him, so he and his friends decide to call it white harlem. If you check the crime statistics, morningside heights is one of the safest areas in the ivy league. While Harlem is close, it is down the hill to the north (technically starts at 125'th street) and is east separated by a park called morningside park. The neighborhood around 125th street is in harlem but is also extremely safe. The famous apollo theater is on 125th street and Bill Clinton chose to put his office in the middle of harlem on 125th street. many parts of harlem are large commercial areas that are completely safe. When i was a student at columbia over 25 years ago, i felt completely safe walking from campus up into harlem upto 145th street. General rule of thumb in ny, any street that is teeming with people is completely safe. Many areas of Harlem, like other areas of new york, are very crowded and safe.

Just got my 3rd quarter grades, which I was planning on sending to Columbia to prove that I haven't slacked off second semester senior year. EXCEPT...it turns out that I have an A- in my NEWSPAPER class, for god's sake--of all classes, newspaper is definitely not the one I expected an A- in. The other 5 grades were all As. This would definitely not be a problem if it weren't for the fact that I have a 4.000 cumulative, unweighted GPA, so you could see it as I HAVE slipped a little, even though quarter grades don't count and I'll definitely pull it up by the end of the semester.

Do you think I should still send my 3rd quarter grade report to Columbia? I still love Columbia and would go there if admitted! I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

Oh you sound just like me! -All crazy over grades and such, but I'll tell you what my friends tell me- an "A-" is not a sign of weakness, or in your case, "slacking"!!! If you want to send your report card you should, but personally, at this point I dont think it will make or break your case. They know you have the grades, the smarts, etc. To win them over send something really compelling- w/o terribly going over there whole "only send us a max of one page!!" rule. Be dead honest- tell them why you want to go there, and why they should want you, and then pray, alot. Where else did you get in? :) good luck!

Does anyone know how to find your regional admissions representative's number/email address? I looked on Columbia's site for a directory but I can't find anything. I would really appreciate it! I'm looking for the New Jersey-Pennsylvania region but can't find anything giving me a name or contact.

Hey everyone,
I was waitlisted too. In fact, everyone I know who applied to Columbia got waitlisted. I feel like they waitlisted much more than they should have.
Anyways, I have a question. You all have heard of the crazy stories of people calling up the Admissions office a million times..writing many letters..and finally getting accepted!!! Miracle or hard work, they got in. Now I am definitely submitting the one page letter to Columbia, but I'm curious.... what do you say when you call? "Hi was waitlisted. Please accept me." ??? What on earth do these people say that eventually benefits them?

Well thanks!

is may 1st a postmark or an arrival date for you turn in your reply form?

most likely postmark...usually are.

it's postmark (i'm a current student).

T____T columbia, please accept me.

hehe.

lol i just sent my "one page letter" to columbia to beg them to accept me..excellent lol

I actually spoke to an admissions officer a last week. They have no idea right now as to whether they will admit anyone from the waitlist or if so, how many they will admit.

IMO: When I was waitlisted last year for a school, it basically amounted to prolonged torture. In the end they admitted 20 of around 500 waitlisted students. I was not one of them. However, the school that I now attend is a great fit...and it happens to be Columbia. If I were you, I would have attended the Open days. If you couldn't make those, then visiting the campus anyway would be a good idea, as would sitting in on a few classes. Besides the letter of interest and updating the Officers on your achievements, you can only wait since waitlisted students are usually contacted sometime around June. However, my roomate was pulled before she went to Georgetown in late July, and she is brilliant - fits in on campus, has high grades, (etc.) so I was surprised that she was waitlisted in the first place.
Good luck.

do you think its enough to just send a letter and sit back? what should we do? go there? call?

when do you think is the absolute latest time to send the letter by?

it seems like columbia's 'waitlist' thread is the most active, therefore with the most people...does that mean columba waitlisted a lot of people>

ooh....... i hope people in this thread only are waitlisters in columbia.....
i'm one of them, too T_T
