Does being waitlisted at Duke mean that I am rejected in a polite way? Does it mean that I am a qualified candidate with good academic credentials? Does it mean that I would get in if there are more spaces at Duke?

Also, I learned from the other post that approximately 600 RD applicants and 400 ED applicants have enrolled at Duke. It looks like Duke is not going to use its waitlist this year. I'm so bummed.

well still over 600 spots left to fill.

It means those second two things all the time... and the first one a lot of the time. By being waitlisted they acknowledge that you are easily qualified for the school and would be able to add to the community. Sadly, with top schools they have to decline many people who are more than easily qualified to go there.

Sorry about the waitlistedness! Hopefully you will get in off of it (if you REALLY want to go to Duke you should get in contact with the school and send in extra Recs and such) and if not, anyone that can even get waitlisted at Duke (and many people who can't) will be able to be extremely successful where ever the college search may lead you.

Does the waitlist indicate the difficulty for me to do well at Duke?

Really at a top school like an Ivy or at Duke and Stanford or whatnot I think waitlist students are almost indistinguishable from people that got accepted. It might be frustrating to know you were so close, but don't think that you werent as qualified as some people that got in. The waitlist MIGHT say that they didn't think Duke was the best FIT for you personally... but that doesn't reflect on your ability to succeed there as much as your enjoyment of the school and the people.
