Waitlisted...

My son was waitlisted after being deferred EA.

OOS/male
SAT 1500/1600 2230/2400 ACT 33
GPA 4.0 uw

Accepted to Michigan Honors without applying for it...

hmmm

Didn't read his essay....

damn.... first deferred, now waitlisted.
i had all my hopes on UNC

seriously, should i just give up already???

yep... waitlisted... i'm pretty sure it was because of my horrible SAT scores... but still hoping they'll accept me! anyone know what they'll do yet?

For those who got wait listed - don't get your hopes down. Of the people who got accepted, many will attend another college/university. There will be plenty of open spots with will be available to all those who are wait listed. While it may not be an acceptance, getting wait listed isn't that bad. A lot of students get accepted after being wait listed.

Good luck

Could someone who got waitlisted post the wording of the notice? I got a notice that said that it would be "several weeks" before a decision is made, but it didn't specifically mention a waitlist, so I'm wondering if it's the same thing.

Thanks...

The letter on the website and sent to my house was:

Thank you again for applying to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After carefully reviewing your application, we are sorry to say that we are unable to offer you admission at this time. However, we would like to place your name on a waiting list for possible openings should any become available later this year.

Admission from the waiting list will depend on the number of students who confirm their enrollment by the May 1 postmark deadline. If spaces become available, all waiting-list candidates will be reviewed as a group, and we will offer admission to those who we believe will complete the class. In any event, we will write to you by June 30 with our final decision.

In the meantime, to accept a position on the waiting list, please take the following steps:

Sign this form by entering your password in the password and confirmation boxes below, and then press the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of this screen. To be considered for any spaces that may become available, you will need to complete this step no later than April 20, 2007.

Send us your final transcript if your school year ends before we notify you of our final decision. Beyond these final grades, we do not recommend that you send additional materials.

Read the Questions about the Waiting List.

Select another college or university, and send that institution your enrollment deposit by their specified deadline.

All of these steps are important. Your educational future and your peace of mind require that you address step four and make plans to enroll at another college or university. The other steps will ensure that you receive consideration for any spaces that may become available here at Carolina.

Since we must now turn our attention to the enrolling class, and because it is critical for you to accept admission elsewhere, we regret that we will not be able to provide interviews or personal appointments for students on the waiting list. Because the waiting list is unranked, and because we will not know until later this spring whether any spaces will become available, we also are unable to forecast any student’s chances of being admitted. Should spaces become available, our review will focus primarily on your original application and on any additional grades you may submit.

I know that you have already waited patiently for an answer from us, and I regret that we must now ask you to wait still longer. We will make every effort to resolve the waiting list as quickly and as carefully as we can. In the meantime, thank you again for your interest in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Sincerely,

Assistant Provost and Director of Undergraduate Admissions

just curious, did anyone apply to both uva and unc out of state? I got waitlisted at unc (4.0 gpa, 1370 M+V), which makes me nervous for uva lol. Although, it seems like UNC would be harder to get into out of state (roughly 16-17 % acceptance rate out of state for unc vs. roughly 32-33% acceptance rate for uva).

Waitlisted, too...(sigh).

OOS, female
SAT: 1380/2090
SAT II: WH 800, AH 760, Lit 710
GPA: UW 3.88, W 6.01
Rank: top 5%

Essays: One I thought was quite witty...the other was...not that great, I admit now.
Rec: It could have been better, I suppose.
EC: MUN, Litmag, setting up a poetry/music night, Girl Scouts, piano competitions, NAHS, and probably one or two more I'm forgetting.

Now I'm really worried about my chances at the other schools I applied to. I'm hoping that it was my essays and rec that possibly brought me down (especially since three other people at my school with lower stats were admitted over me).

Gaaaaaah. The wait for March 29th is even more intense now. :(

i was waitlisted at OOS and i applied to UVA (#1 choice). I am a black male so it might be different for me...but I wish I had gotten this decision after UVA. UVA takes more students from my school every year and chapel hill only takes about one or two so I think my chances for UVA are better. I am very nervous though. I also got a likely-ish letter from UVA so we will see

Ernsern12,
My son got into UVA ED OOS and into UNC OOS a month later. After receiving an offer of admission from UVA December 1st, he wrote a letter to UNC to pull his early notification application, but, lo and behold, he got a phone call in early Jan telling him to check his status...and he was accepted. Not sure how those wires got crossed. He's going to UVA next fall and is thrilled. The good news it that his stats were almost exactly like yours. 1360/2050 SAT with 4.0 in all honors/ 7 APs. Lots of EC's, leadership positions, 4 years Varsity soccer, blah, blah, blah...We were frankly shocked he got into UNC (thought he'd need much higher SAT from OOS), not as shocked about UVA (they advertise their emphasis on transcript vs. SAT scores, and his transcript, like yours, was perfect). In any case, he was proud to get into two such great schools. Don't give up on UVa, it sounds like you have a great chance!

Good luck to you!

Wow I'm surprised at the stats of some of the students who got waitlisted - definitely much better than mine and I got in..

Good luck to you all.

Waitlisted

Academics:

GPA - Unweighted: 3.50
GPA - Weighted: 5.29

Scores:

SAT I Math: 780
SAT I Critical Reading: 740
SAT I Writing: 710
ACT: 32
SAT II Literature: 690
SAT II Math Level 2 (IIC): 650 =(

Extracurriculars:

Significant Extracurriculars: Class Parliamentarian, Best Buddies, Guitarist in local bands, job, Debate Club
Leadership positions: Powder Puff Captain, Boys Volleyball Captain, Varsity Club founder, Organized tons of local concerts/benefits
Athletic Status - list sport and your level: Soccer - Club 4 years
Volunteer/Service Work: Red Cross, United Way, YMCA Coach, etc.
Honors and Awards: AP Scholar with Honors, whatever else i forget
Essays: Damn Good

Fendertime, I assume you are OOS? Sorry!

You had very impressive stats! Just like my son. Hard to understand why they put so much emphasis on an essay....which could be written by anyone...not necessarily the student.

BadgerDad - How do you know they place a lot of emphasis on the essay?

Posts: 34 For those of you who got waitlisted but still have good stats... remember essays are huge. Even if you wrote a grammatically perfect essay, that was concise, clear, and to the point, it won't even necesarily be enough.

Quoting the admissions officer here: "You could have a grammatically perfect essay - any English teacher would be proud of you. But it has to tell us about you, and if it's perfect, but boring, it's like a 2x4"

Didn't know he was an admissions officer.

Thanks.

(Good thing I had good essays)

Hah thanks for the compliment.. I didn't expect to get into UNC though as out of state is impossible. I'm happy my best friend got in, but odds are he won't even go there so that's pretty lame. But really, he's a far harder worker and deserved it, his extracurriculars and stats are absurd so he deserved it. Ironically, I'm pretty sure it was for UNC that one of the essays was about your friend you respect the most or something, and I wrote about him.

only one person was accepted from my school

I think I'm the only one who applied from my school - and got in.

I'm also OOS.

I'm OOS and 3 people in my district (our high school recently split into two) got accepted. Possibly 4 because one girl may be playing field hockey there, but I'm not sure if she got in or not. The other 2 (or 3 if she gets in) are at the high school that I don't go to.
