Waitlisted :[[[

i guess that it means that wellesley may not be taking as many people off the waitlist this year? oh well :(

i got the letter weeks ago too... Haberdashery, when you sent in your supplementary, did Wellesley call your college counselor too? The admission called my counselor to talk about me, but that might be becasue I stupidly called Wellesley a "University of California".... i know a very stupid mistake, but I was under a lot of stress!

ohhh, icic, i don't think that they called my college counselor (due to the lack of one) but did u talk to them about ur mistake and get it cleared?

Yesterday i called them to ask about the waitlist. They said the class looked full now, but the waitlist would be active until june 30. But when i asked whether it meant i still had chances to get in. They said people on the waitlist will be considered, but chances may be slim. The officer is so nice that she explained a lot to me and tried not to break my heart. But what she intended to say is that they don't need to consider the waitlist now and very possibly will not in the future either.

whaaaat? does that mean theyre not taking anyone off the waitlist? or they already chose who theyre taking off? this is horrrrrible news

A waitlist is like flying standby. There's absolutely no guarantee that they'll take anyone. And quite often the number is "zero." And even if waitlisted student are subsequently accepted, it's usually a small percentage of the total list. If you get an offer while on the waitlist, take it as winning the lottery. Plan A needs to be somewhere you've been accepted. This applies to all wait lists, not just Wellesley.

well the past four years theyve taken more than zero so i was hoping they would again

Okay, I just grabbed the handiest data: for 2003, 287 applicants accepted a place on Wellesley's wait list, 18 percent of them were admitted. Odds of better than 4-1 against. For 2004, it was 352 on the waitlist, roughly 90 admitted...still 3-1 against. But by all accounts from many colleges, this year has been a particularly ugly year for admissions due to demographic trends, a combination of the peak number of applicants from the "Baby Boom echo" and applicants applying to more schools.

I have nothing against hope. But I also believe in realism. So many "wait list" posts seem to assume that if there's movement, the poster will be one of the lucky ones. Meanwhile, there's a delay in making plans for the options that are more realistic, bonding with a school that you'll likely be going to, etc.

That many? Wow... I thought it was a longer shot than that.

im already looking foward to the school i placed my deposit to, but i dont think i should give up on wellesley either. it would just be exciting if they started taking anyone off the waitlist.

WM, I was surprised it was that many too, having in the past just scanned wait list data in general without looking at any particular college. However, the picture this year from a number of institutions is pretty bleak. Reportedly, Amherst and Dartmouth are taking ZERO, Harvard about 30, MIT 20.

Hi everyone. I hope this isn't a stupid quesiton, but if you're waitlisted and you choose to remain on it by sending in a card, does that mean its binding? I just want to make sure before I send mine in. And yea...waitlisted here too. Best of luck to all! :)

I'm pretty sure it's not binding because I think you're allowed to stay on the waitlist for multiple colleges. At least, I haven't read about anything stating the contrary.

Can anyone confirm this?

It's not binding.

such a long time I hadn't come back to here XXDDD..
I think in the wl letter, it says clearly that, around 350 accepted wl last yr, but they accepted none...gosh...

Good luck to all of you who were waitlisted! It's astounding how many schools are waitlisting this year. Next year is going to be worse, apparently.

this doesn't really contribute much to the discussion but: waitlists are mean and they suck. sigh
