It seems like BC is playing some big game here in hopes of increasing gaining a more presigious reputation. By waitlisting so many seemingly overqualified applicants, they're trying to project an image of extreme selectivity and unpredictability characteristic of institutions far better than them.

Dear Joesmom,

I have been waitlisted at BC and really want to get in.
I am living in Japan, and have sent out the the waitlist response card along with a letter stating that I would go to Boston for an interview if helpful. I have also sent my updated grades as they requested. I am hesitant of sending any new information as they said only "the only new information considered would be your most recent grades."
Was the rules changed from last year or should I proceed to send them "awards, newspaper clippings, [reccomendation letters,] etc."

If any other people have suggestions it would be much appreciated.

aalur, you have to keep in mine that they got close to 27,000 applications for a little over 2,000 spots. Even if their yield isn't that high, they're going to have a very low admit rate this year.

24,000 applications this year (NOT 27,000) but still mighty competitive for admission. BC does not really play "selectivity games." BC is hot and receives an incredible amount of qualified applications each year. The Committee chooses among qualified applicants and they are fantastic in explaining their process on their admission website.

Students in the Top 10% with SAT I's from 1200-1450 are quite common in the applicant pool. Who gets in? Those students with most challenging programs in high school who also have consistent and top grades in those courses. Those students also have interesting, diversified and substantial extracurriculars. It may be even more competitive for students applying to BC from major markets like the New England and Middle Atlantic regions. So if you are an applicants from NY, NJ, MA or PA, you may have a tougher time gaining admission.

Cheini, I am not Joesmom, but I do have one child a junior at BC, and one will be a freshman in the fall. I would do everything that Joesmom recommended in her post. It will show that you are really interested. Let them know that BC is your first choice. Good luck!

BTW, my son, the incoming freshman, just spent 10 days in Japan on a school trip. He loved it!

First off, let me say that I am completely shock and appalled that so many of you with such great scores and achievement being waitlisted.

I'm going to put in my two sense and my experience with the admission office. I applied early action to Boston College and was deffered to regular. I thought I was a goner, my academic stats is not that great (compare to some here) and BC is right on my backyard so that doesn't help either. What I do is bother the admission director to death, yes to death. Dont do it to annoy them, but to be helpful. I wrote up a lengthy letter explaining in details about why I want to attend BC, my stregth and weaknesses (weakness make u sound more human and humble), where would i fit in BC and how I could contribute. I also send paper clips of my accomplishments (the more you got the better), copy of all the certificates, awards, achievements I received. I also include phone numbers of respectable organizations I had work with, who would be willing to speak on my behalf. By the end of "self-marketing" blitzkrieg, the admission officers know me by first name and instantly recognize me when i called. They offer me admissions along with a hefty amount of financial aid. Even though my stats is not so great, my enthusiasism fill in the gap and get my the admissions. Good luck to everyone who waitlisted, I would love to attend class with such distinguish individuals.

Wow, I got waitlisted too. It's my first choice and I would really like to get in.

1350 sat 4.0 excellent references. Declined spot and will attend to Loyola Maryland. They gave me a great scholarship which I can't reject. Loved Baltimore and the school when I visited it. Boston is pretty nice too.

for those who got waitlisted what did you do.. send a letter? send grades? call?
.. i sent a letter and my grades. but at this point we don't even know if they're taking anyone off the waitlist!

i was also waitlisted at bc, and was surprised to see the extremely high stats kids who got waitlisted.

i have a 1370 3.5 with sat ii's 710 720 660

plenty of extracurriculars (president of a club), plenty of service, part time job, lots of awards, etc.

from my school (i go to a catholic school about 45 minutes from the bc campus), we had 70 kids apply to bc. 20 were accepted, 15 waitlisted, and 35 rejected.

anyway, though my stats are pretty bad compared to the rest of you, i would just like to pass on the advice i've received from talking to my guidance department, teachers, professors, etc...

first, send plenty of letters updating them with recent achievements and also send your recent grades. also, send them a well written letter detailing what you can offer to the school if accepted..and most importantly, let them know you will definitely attend if accepted. also, if you can, make connections in any way possible..if you know anyone that knows anyone that knows anyone, let them know you want to go to bc.

good luck to all of you.

yeah for waitlist... i sent in a bunch of stuff which i hope helps me. just called to check and see if it was received but i only got a message machine. daaaannng. well eh....

Yup, I got waitlisted too.
Stats:
Rank: top 10%
GPA: 98
SATs: 1320
SATIIs: 750 writing, 720 math IC, 660 french
all AP and honors courses, even better grades my senior yr than any of my other years
tons of ECs: Varsity Cheerleading for 4 yrs (capt this yr), student council, NHS, secretary of french honor society, student alliance, volunteer to help AIDS families, started fundraiser for animal orphanage and humane society, internship at district attorney's office, etc. etc. etc. WHAT MORE DO THESE SCHOOLS WANT FROM US?! I got waitlisted from BC and Vanderbilt and I'm saying yes to BU, but I still wanna see about my waitlist schools.

what schools within bc were yall waitlisted at?

i was waitlisted for carroll school of management...

seriously... i have a bunch of really great ecs! idk and lots of volunteering. eh. who knows what they want!

i was also waitlisted at the carroll school.

i overheard part of a conversation between one of our school's head guidance counselor and another senior, and she confirmed that bc will be going to the waitlist this year, as bc i guess has already called our school to let them know that they need kids who want to go

i think its a good sign for me because my guidance counselor told me that i am their #1 recommendation to get in should bc go to the waitlist..

lets just keep our fingers crossed

post here if you hear from the waitlist!

waitlisted at the lynch school of ed.

makes my chances of getting off the waitlist about 1 in 1,000,000,000...awesome.

good luck everyone!

where would u go if u didnt get in???

i thought the lynch school was easier to get in than the rest of them

its supposed to be however the enrollment is significantly smaller than carroll or the college and i'm sure many who are accepted into education end up going b/c of its focused undergraduate program and as a result its more difficult to get off the waitlist because there are that many spots to fill to begin with and i have heard that the matriculation rate is higher than the college. by "easier" i think its just that the quality of the applicants is slightly lower (sat scores, rank) but even so bc doesnt accept bad students just because of the school they applied to.

this is what i heard from my gc and others and it makes sense b/c there are about 5,700 in the college vs. 700 in lynch for undergrad so there are that many less spots.

i really don't know if that made any sense.
