Waitlisted

I applied to School of the Foreign Service and found out yesterday that I've been put on the waiting list.

My question... is it worth it to stay on, or is getting waitlisted just a backdoor rejection? Do I have any realistic chance of getting in?

Wait List Stats of Class entering Fall 2003 ( Per US News & World Report)

Qualified Applicants Placed on Waitlist......2039
Applicants Accepting a Place on Waitlist...1216
Students enrolled from Waitlist..................138

If this is representative, there's about a 1 in 9 chance of getting in off the wait list.
Obviously you should make plans elsewhere, since you won't hear about getting in off the Waitlist until after the May 1st deadline to Accept a spot at another School.

The best thing to do is to contact the specific program you applied for and ask them how likely it is to get in from the wait list.
Also let them know you still want to attend - if that's what you want to do.

definitely accept a place at whichever school you would want to go to if you don't go to Georgetown, and accept a place on the waitlist if it's where you want to go. If you get in, and you still want to go, then you just withdraw from the other school.

I got waitlisted at the college, and there was a sheet enclosed that showed the number of students on the waitlist and how many got in for the past few years. Sometimes it's over 10%, so it seems like there still is a chance of you getting in, unlike some other schools that put practically everyone who doesn't get accepted on the waitlist.
