HEY, im new here. I just want to say how great this website is, no lie dudes I feel normal now! I thought i was worrying to much!
I have a really good friends she is like 100 times smarter then me,lol who got waitlisted for this really great small all girls prep day school.(the hewitt school) I have no idea how, she was a total SHOE IN!!!!!!! Some advice on what she could do?

Me on the other hand because of some paperwork mishap I couldnt apply to Dalton or Collegiate here in the city! Well i eventually opened up to boarding school. I applied to NMH, Kent, Middlesex and Concord.

Because this was a last resort because of dumb people at certain offices we were catapulted into hurrying paperowrk in for these schools at the last minute. I managed to get an interview at Kent Thnk God, but Middlesex happened to close it's interviews the same day!!!!!!
I felt like crying. About the other three I really dont give two hoots about.

I my average has not dipped below a 91, its usually 96 to 99, although a couple of times i have gotten more like 106 and 118%, like 4 times. My average rank for the past years are number 1 across the board. I am very involved at school. I am in third year orchestra, strings violin, i have done 6,232 hours of comuunity service since fith grade, i am now in grade eight. I think that it looks the best. I knew i would need something so seperate myself among the rest, do you think it will do as i planned? I have been in yearbook, science club, math club, biodiversity club, home ec, theater lead roles. Basically i try to do everything humanely possible. The only thing i have not thoroughly tried is sports. I did join the swimming and soccer last year though but i really wasn't the star. Now that i know that you have to get the ball inside the net, lol and how to properly do a backstroke and how to endure freezing water, next year i plan to havily pursue athletics. But i think i might get waitlisted, my friends portafolio is so much fatter then mine and she got waitlisted. Do you think i might end up at Xavier Highschool, this other private school in the city i got into?

What are my chances for kent and middlesex?
what schools have you tried for or know others who have?
what are the schools reputation among other schools?
should i begin to set myself up for failure?

IM SO NERVOUS!

you shouldn't apply to boarding school just because you didn't get into a day school

but you should do ecs that you like. come on, knowing the exact number of service hours you have done. Community service is about helping others, not being able to say "well you should admit me to your school because I have done 6,232 hours of community service"

Swimming is a toughie sport. If you want to pursue it competitively at BS then you betta work HARD. Usually its reserved for people who love the water and everything about it (talk to Herculez or bestswimmer)
If you want to "heavily pursue athletics" then you should probably get in shape now. They have rec. teams but its certainly not "heavy".

As for your chances, I dont think our opinions will do much good. Your letters will come in about 2 weeks. Most people ask their chances in order to decide whether or not to spend their time applying (not that anyones insight should sway them).

Best of luck!!

I joined this site just a week ago, and I'm in love with it too. I found so many people who completly understand what I am going through. As for your chances, you ec are excellent. I only started bball this season and I am planning on heavily pursuing them as well. I'm applying to Chatham Hall in Va. I think your chances are pretty good, but I would have to see you SSAT scores. Also no one on this site can tell you what the admission people are thinking. I know what you mean about being nervous. Ahhh March 10th is so far away.

huh, nervous? I'm totally and completely flipping out, and one of my friends died last tuesday, which is not making me feel any better. :( but you look pretty good to me, those community service hours will help you, but your ec's (no offense) kind of look like you just did them so you could put them on the application. did you just join those clubs this year or have you been doing them for a while? what's your ssat score?

I have been doing those clubs for a while. I did not take the SSAT but i did take the ISEE. Like i told you i wasnt considering boarding schools. I scored in the 9th stanines in all sections and it was in the logical reasoning part where i got a couple wrong, 3 to 4. Well the schools were very nice and said they understood one told me they let 7 other kids use the ISEE as well. As for my exact scorage i do not know because i do not have the paper wit me. Although i rocked it

Aussie13, I think you might have made a calculation error. FYI 6,232 hours of community service would be a lot. That's roughly 40 hours a week for three years without a vacation.

I am sorry nelly. i hope you will be ok. :(

Im sry too, i have no doubt your hard work will be rewraded with ur top school!

thanks guys. :)

where did all the community service come from aussie? i can't imagine getting all those hours! i probably only have like a hundred or so! lol.

i volunteer allover n.y.c. I spent atleast 4 hours a weekday volunteering at food pantries hospitals shelters charity drives summits a bunch of other stuff. I spend almost all weekends volunteering somewhere. I have been in Good Morning America, N.Y Family Magazine and the daily news for those calling my numbers miscalculations and telling me that i jst volunteer to do it. I do it because i know i am helping others and it feels wonderful. I also spend all my summers volunteering and in the future i plant to open my own non-profit organization. Sry it's that i dnt like it when plp judge me unfairly.

Ur welcome Nelly! ; -)

that's so awesome aussie! what a coll way to spend your time! what kind of non-profit organization do you want to start?

I just hope you didn't write the exact number on the application and just did the weekly hours

you know, so you don't seem like the community service version of one of those people who is obsessed with their gpa

come again? I dont understand

i disagree, it's good he put all the hours down, that's his hook, i hghly doubt anyone else will have that many hours!

Thnx NellyRae! ;- )

Admissions are mystifying. We know a brilliant boy who was not accepted, not even waitlisted, at a top school. Another classmate was accepted at different top school and waitlisted at the school that did not accept brilliant boy.

You show tons of initiative with your volunteer work so go for it!

my friend who is really smart, first chair in the state orchestra, and plays 2 other instruments equally well was rejected

oh and I forgot to say that her mom is best friends with one of the interviewers

I have a lot of things that she doesn't, but first chair + connections is hard to beat and just shows how hard it is to get in.

aussie13, you have posted a lot of information here that could distinguish you from other candidates so to say you "don't give two hoots" about some of the schools you are applying to could sabotage all your hard work. be careful. just wondering: why are you applying to schools that you don't care about?

I just did it to make some peeple happy like family, and several of my teachers who attended there and have children there. So i just wanted to make them feel happy!! These people whom i have known for years would have felt devestated if i had not applied to those three other schools, lol.
And u r right, this information is enough for a lot of plp to track me down, i begged the moderators but they dont even respond! Im scared! lol
