well the fact that you weren't rejected but waitlisted means you had some good points they liked about you, so depending on how many reject the offer, you might have a shot.

but then again, it may be due to your reason. is it financial aid? because if it is, your chances might get a little slimmer, unless all the seniors are on FA and will thus lower the percentages schools love to brag about. and for most boarding schools like the ones you mentioned above, I'm not too sure if that's the case.

But dreams are always prettier when we have hope :)

I'm not too sure about the other schools, but I think a LOT of people were waitlisted at Andover. Like a LOOOOOT. My friend and I were waitlisted and I've probably at least seen 10 or so people that were waitlisted on this website alone.

Don't give up, though! For all you know, you could be number one on the people-being-waitlisted-list, so good luck!
Or wait, are there actually rankings on the people-being-waitlisted-list...?

I contacted Paul Rebuck (milton) and asked if I should add my name to the waitlist even though I have to tell KPS within a month if I'm returning next year. He said that I should put my name on the list and when the time comes check in with them

I would suggest contacting the admissions people if you're in my situation to see what they think

hey yeah i was waitlisted at deerfield (devastating.. its me DREAM school) and my sister goes there so i know that they accept 50 freshman girls hoping that 45 will enroll, and then put approx 10 on the waitlist...

hope that helps sabregrl94

best of luck everyone...im sure you all deserve the admission to one of these amazing schools!

:( :(
I am waitlisted for Hotchkiss :( I am so worried as I truly love to be part of a US boarding school community (I am international) :( Does anyone know how many (approx) students, esp. those apply for junior year, does Hotchkiss pull out of the waiting list each year? When the schools consider the waitlisted application, do they rank the applicants according to grade (freshman, sophomore,...)?

My understanding is that there is no revisit day for the waitlisted students and that if (and that is a big if) they are offered a spot, they need to be prepared to accept that spot right away (or they risk losing it). That is why, when you accept the waitlist spot, it really helps to contact them and let them know that you absolutely will accept the spot if it comes available. They have plenty of kids who will jump at a waitlist spot.

There is nothing wrong with telling all 4 of your waitlist schools that you "absolutely would attend" if you were offered a spot -- as long as that is true. It is a million to one shot that multiple schools would contact you at the same time to offer you a spot in the class. As long as you are willing to take the first spot offered and then remove yourself from the other waitlists, then you can honestly say that you would definitely attend if offered the spot.

roses&clovers -- it is unlikely that you will get into a school where you are on the waitlist (and even more unlikely that you will get FA if you need it) so you definitely need to make other plans and follow through with them. If kps needs an answer by 3/31 -- you need to tell them yes.

What you really need to find out is what is the penalty for telling kps yes and then not attending next year. Last year a student was offered an admission spot as late as August (no FA, though). Will you lose a deposit or have to pay a penalty? if it is a cost your parents could afford, tell kps yes and stay on the waiting list. If it is a cost your parents couldn't afford, then you will have to tell kps yes -- and take your name off the waiting list.

Personally, what I would do, is to tell kps yes on 3/31 (after calling Milton and checking on your waiting list status) and keep your name of the waiting list. If Milton does offer you an admission spot, see what it will cost you to get out of the kps contract and make your decision then. They may say upfront that it will be thousands of dollars in penalties -- but when you actually get into Milton, they may just let you go. You don't know.

One of our schools (only one of the three my son was accepted to however) sent a card that said something like: even though we give youuntil the 10th to decide, if you make a decision before then, it is your responsibility to notifiy the school you are accepting AND as importantly, the other schools IMMEDIATELY of the decision - do not wait - as it allows them to plan and potentially admit students who are waiting for a spot.

Now, our waitlists specifically said that they don't usually know until after April 10th if anything opens up.

Taking both of those statements into consideration, I suppose there may be a very slight that you could know in advance, so it can't hurt to send it in.

Can you ask your current school for an extension until April 15th?

Do most contracts for boarding schools lock in as early as June 1? My son's been accepted to his second choice day school. (He's a Sixth Grader and boarding school is not an option at this stage.) We're prepared to lose our deposit if he's offered a slot at his first choice school before the contract locks in on June 1. After that, the school's contract holds you are responsible for the full year's tuition -- no matter what. There's insurance for illness and relocation, etc., but it does not cover arbitrary withdrawal before the start of school.

I understand this is standard but it would kill me to have my son's first choice school call on, say, June 10 or even June 25 and offer him a slot. The school that accepted my son has a wait list. It's in high demand with a great reputation and college placement. Further, we live in an affluent, "high education index" city where applications to many day schools run 10 applicants for every slot. I'm sure they'd fill the slot. What might I expect if this scenario played out? Do schools work with families? I'm not about to ask anyone at either school!

Perhaps some of you savvy parents and the informative sbergman can shed some light!
