It's just upsetting to imagine that they'd waitlist or deny you because you seem 'unlikely to enroll', especially if this is because your stats are too high...

This sucks for people like me who were hoping to attend.

TTwhite - I certainly understand your frustration. I don't know what you have done so far to show your interest in Tulane, so I am going to assume the worst case, which would be you did nothing beyond sending in the app. Even if you did more, I think you should find out who your admissions officer is, if you don't already know. Send them an e-mail requesting a specific time for a phone call so they are prepared with your file. Then talk to them and just say that while you can appreciate that while there are a lot of factors that go into their decisions, you wanted to make sure they knew that if you got accepted by Tulane you would go. Or that if you got accepted by Tulane and if you got $17K you would go. Or whatever the truth is. Communication is key at this stage.

[addendum] After having written that, I looked back at your initial post and it says you really are not all that interested in Tulane. Maybe it kind of proves my point? Not trying to **** you off or anything, I am just saying they have a hard job and, having done this for years and years, they probably have good probability scenarios of how to proceed. Their motive is Tulane's best interest, and that is no doubt what they are acting on.

My s received an e-mail from an admissions person that says "congratulations on your 4.0" last semester and "we are currently in the process of reviewing your file. You should receive your decision by April 1."

If they are going to reject him, why wait until April 1? If they wanted to keep "on hold," why not just waitlist him? Or is this Tulane's version of a waitlist? My s thinks that no one is actually rejected until April. Any insight?

I think sharonohio hit it right on the head. It's definitely the number of undecided, admitted students hanging in limbo that has Tulane waitlisting so many extremely qualified applicants. For my daughter, their free, online, priority app was relatively easy and convenient as a first application. She submitted it in November, and heard back two weeks later. But now...waiting. Has to see the RD decisions before she can compare Tulane's $24K, Honors College offer. I'm sure there are a lot of others in her situation. Again, it's just a numbers thing that's got Tulane deferring so many great kids. Nothing to do with the quality of applicants.

Sharonohio: you got it right....lots were waitlisted RD b/c Tulane has no idea who from EA w scholarships will accept (and there were surely alot of them)......

Waitlisted as well with a 1400/2030 SAT, 30 ACT, 3.6 GPA, and like 8 AP courses - Tulane wasn't my top choice but in the top 5 or 6 so it kinda sucks

I also received the waitlist email today. Like a lot people, Tulane wasn't at the top of my schools, but it was in the middle. I would've been happy to attend if I didn't get accepted to my top choices. It's definitely a great school, which is one of the reasons I applied. The other being that they give out GOOD scholarships and that the app was free. Oh well, I'm going to decline their waitlist.

I wonder when those who got wait listed applied? My s applied early with a priority app and got in with 17,000. His stats were good 31 ACT/3.7 gpa, but not high as some of those who were waitlisted. He too, is waiting for RD offers.

I'll bet if you show ANY interest (mail an adcom expressing how upset you are about being waitlisted or whatever), you'll be accepted. They just wanted to boost applications so they could get a low acceptance rate.

And again, another "are you coming" email from Tulane. And my daughter applied in December I think.

My son recieved an email today saying that he was "waitlisted". However, when we called the school, the admissions office's reply was that the "decision was still pending". The portal also indicated that a decision was not official. Should I believe this email? Has anyone else gotten one like it? Has anyone been accepted?

chinablue, I too was waitlisted. I also checked my status and it said my decision was pending as well. The sad part is that Tulane really was in my top 3, if I didn't get into Colgate or Pitzer. My stats were up to par, I think: GPA 3.82 UW, 4.58 W; SAT: 2230; SAT2: Math2:760, US Hist:780; ACT: 32; and a fair amount of ec's with some leadership positions.

I accepted to be on their waitlist. Does anyone know whether or not that will help and show Tulane that I am in fact interested in attending? I know their yield rate is exceptionally low (17% I think), so wouldn't they want to accept the students who say "yes" to being on the waitlist, to increase their yield? Should I bother writing a personal letter telling them my interest in Tulane?

June 1st is way too late and I can't wait that long.

I got the wait-list email last night too! I was surprised; the only reason I applied was because they pestered me with free priority apps and I expected merit money. I have a 3.7 GPA and 2100 on my SATs.

anotherhopeful - absolutely, if you can convince Tulane you have a pretty fair chance of going should they accept you, it will influence them. However, if you really are more interested in Colgate or Pitzer and will know by April 1 from them, why not accept Tulane's offer, write them a letter tellling them you have it narrowed down to Tulane and two others, wait and see what happens with the other 2, and then act accordingly? If you get into and decide on Colgate or Pitzer, then write Tulane and tell them thanks, but you have decided to accept another offer. If you don't get into either of them, then you have already let Tulane know you are very interested and can press them further for a decision. I don't see how you have anything to lose.

I don't get why Tulane is such an uproar. I think it's the most overrated school out there; it's not the next Vanderbilt. :

xSteven - not sure what your point is, but your comments are immature and don't add to the discussion. If you don't like Tulane, that's fine. Don't go there, don't send your kids there. Maybe they turned you down and you are lashing out.

BTW, last year's class was close to Vandy in test score averages, and with this year's class likely to show a 30 point rise in the average SAT score, it might even pass up Vandy. None of that is particularly meaningful, however. They are both fine schools that are actually extremely similar.

so i got into vanderbilt and wailtisted at tulane??? i was actually expecting scholarship money so this is very odd, i had a 2120 on the SAT and A average and lots of APs and solid recomendations
a classmate of mine with a higher GPA but way lower SAT just got accepted with money last weekend so i was pretty shocked by their decision
i was truly considering the school too so i'm kind of upset

smd123 - congrats on Vanderbilt. Make an appointment with the admissions officer assigned to you, telling them in the e-mail you are quite serious about Tulane, a quick recap of your stats, and a few different times when you can talk for them to choose from.

Again everyone, it is not a reflection on you, it is an outgrowth of the process and huge numbers Tulane is seeing. It is apparently resulting in some weird outcomes. But if it really bothers you and you think it is towards the top of your list, be proactive.

thanks for the advice fallenchemist! i think i'll wait and hear from my other schools and then decide how much i want to pursue tulane.. i won't want to waist their time at this point unless i am 100% sure i would go there over my other choices
