Waitlisted at Rice, Carnegie Mellon, and Washu...any hope left for Cornell? I know Cornell is more difficult to get into than these three colleges that is why I am asking.

I got WL’d at WUSTL, but got into Cornell Arts/Sciences with a likely letter.

So you never know.

^ cornell seems easy to get into! a friend of my D has been accepted and she is barely in the top10% with average grades!! i was shocked when i heard she was accepted… i thought like you that cornell was tough to get into!

There are seven different undergraduate colleges at Cornell, all with different admissions criteria. And even so, Cornell is not a ‘numbers’ place. So you definitely shouldn’t be shocked.

Also, how is being in the top 10% having average grades? I would think having better grades than >90% of your peers should be considered above average??

What college did you apply to?

If you applied to Engineering at all those places, you might be worried.

If you applied to a more holistic admissions program, then maybe you shouldn’t be so worried.

Lavieinchocolate, that seems like a rather ignorant assumption: did you happen to read her essays or look at her other accomplishments? Grades are not the only factors that universities look at, especially a place like Cornell which gets plenty of kids who apply with stellar grades.

Sadly I applied to engineering for all those schools including Cornell. So does anyone have any clue as to why I was waitlisted? Possibly low sat scores?

what’s your stats?

Superscore: 760 math, 640 reading, 690 Writing.

yeah that’s kind of low on the ivy scale

You are about average on the Math, but a bit low on the reading. Might not matter much for engineering, but only if you have a stellar academic record.

Thanks for the reply you guys. I do indeed have a good academic record. Anyone know as to why I may have been waitlisted at the other institutions.

Rice is ridiculous (I was waitlisted there as well - SAT 2330 in one sitting (790 M, 800 W, 740 CR), SATII Math2 800, SATII Physics 800, rank 9/540) this year, it appears.
CMU - I don’t know yet, but if you weren’t applying to SCS I can’t comment
WashU - A guy in our top 10 was rejected for chem eng.

I’d just say try not to think about it and see in a week.

I can’t speak for Rice or Carnegie Mellon, but I will say that WashU is notorious for waitlisting an obscene number of applicants.

cone23
i don’t know why you’re waitlisted but a lot of my friends from the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science got into Rice (i think 10 this year, 20 last year) and WasU (i think at least 5 this year). How are you ECs or Volunteering activities? Almost everyone of my friends at TAMS have done college research and they, obviously, reside in TX.

"^ cornell seems easy to get into! a friend of my D has been accepted and she is barely in the top10% with average grades!! i was shocked when i heard she was accepted… i thought like you that cornell was tough to get into! "

That is a very bold statement to be making. As previously stated, top 10% is by definition above average! Plus, there are MANY factors considered when applying to colleges like Cornell. For example, she may have written a beautiful essay or did some volunteer work that showed her genuine interest in a subject.

I was waitlisted at Rice and WUSTL, but I got a likely from Dartmouth. If you applied for a substantial amount of FA, then that might be the reason for your waitlisting. Or at least that is my guess. I’m really doubting Rice’s so-called “need-blind” admissions process now.

LaVie, I’m sure basing your argument on one person’s acceptance makes it valid.

I got wait-listed at Rice and Washu, accepted at UCLA all w/ no FA

also i applied to engineering for all of them…applied Cornell Engineering too…
and Brown undeclared

ahhh i’m so worried…
