[The 2009-11 state budget for the UW : President Emmert’s Blog - washington.edu](<a href=“The 2009-11 state budget for the UW – Office of the President”>The 2009-11 state budget for the UW – Office of the President)

So if they have to cut classes and teachers isnt that a bad thing for us…?

Just thought I’d let anxious waitlisters know, my sister got her email today that she got accepted off the waitlist! (One of the reasons why I joined this thing)

It’s funny b/c she just got her waitlist confirmation letter on Saturday and she got her email today. But anyway, they are starting to go to the waitlist so gl everyone!

returning says “Just thought I’d let anxious waitlisters know, my sister got her email today that she got accepted off the waitlist! (One of the reasons why I joined this thing)”

Of course I am not dis-believing what returining said above BUT I find that notification very odd for a number of reasons:

 1. It is not even May 1st so UW will not,as at today’s date, have any firm figures as to how many accepted students have confirmed their wish to attend UW.

If there was any thought of notifying waitlisters of acceptances before May 1st why would UW effectively “lie” only last week when it said in an email and subsequent letter that it “We will send an email update to all applicants on the waitlist by the end of June. Before then, it is unlikely we will be able to admit applicants from the
waitlist because we will not have enough information about enrollment for the entering class of 2009 ?”

3.The UW president writes only this morning that “Provost Wise will be sending budget allocations for the 2009-11 biennium to deans, chancellors, vice provosts and vice presidents later this week, and they will begin the process of implementing them.” If the suits at UW don’t have any budgets yet, how is it that student numbers are somehow known and decided upon ?

I know the UW said originally there was no ranking of applicants on the waitlist but this early notification would seem to suggest otherwise. If there was a definitive decision to , say let, 200 students in off the waitlist, why haven’t all those 200 been emailed today ? Or was “returnings” sister top of the pile ?
(I cannot imagine that the UW admissions people are going through the whole pile of waitlist applicants and sending out acceptance emails as they go through the pile. That would be illogical)

If the whole “wait until June” policy has been scrapped we should immediately be seeing a waterfall of accepted or rejected waitlisters posting on this thread/board.

If returnings post above is indeed true then I would expect UW to say immediately (a) why they lied in their last email and letter to waitlisters (b) whether or not the "wait until June "policy has been abandoned and (c) now when will all waitlisters to be told yes or no.

If any UW admin people are reading this, you have to step up to the plate very quickly and shed some light on whats happening because you are ef***g with people’s lives and it’s not appreciated.

wow she already got notified? yes that is such good news, thank you returning2uw!
if you/she would not mind sharing, what sort of stats did she have? like gpa, tests, ec’s, and the senior grades we sent in…just curious, thanks!

udubwaiting–i don’t think uw lied, they were just extremely vague in their letter. they said “by the end of june,” which to me means between now and then you will get some sort of update, but i don’t think they are going to send all acceptances/rejections at one time. it kind of makes sense for some people to start hearing over the next few weeks, because although you’re right about may 1st not passing yet and waiting for the budget, the do have pretty much a final idea of how many are enrolling, as may 1 is only three days away now. plus they already practically know they are raising tuition because the board are the ones that asked for it. even without that, they purposefully waitlisted 1000 instead of accepting them, so even without the new tuition they can most likely still accept a number of people from the waitlist.

udubwaiting ~ I really don’t know how to respond to your questions. All I know is she got her email and forwarded it to me as soon as she got it. I have no clue what admissions is doing. After reading some of these posts, I’m not sure anyone really does have solid info but I’m just letting you know what I do know. Here was her email:

April 28, 2009

Address
Address

Dear *****,

Congratulations! With great pleasure I offer you admission to the University
of Washington Seattle Class of 2013. The faculty and students of the
University of Washington welcome you and look forward to having you on campus
beginning autumn quarter 2009.

This email message precedes your letter of admission, which is being sent via
postal mail. The letter will also include information about how to access
online services. In addition to the letter, you will soon receive a large
purple envelope containing the Welcome packet which includes information about
confirming your intention to enroll at the UW, signing up for orientation and
advising programs, taking placement tests, submitting final transcripts, and
other important topics.

We look forward to having you join the UW community!

Warmest regards,

Philip Ballinger, Ph.D.
Director of Admissions

This email was sent to: ********@u.washington.edu

returning2uw-thank you for giving that information to us, it is actually good knowing that they are starting to look at us already. idk if you saw my earlier post, but i think we are all curious to know what sort of statistics your sister had? of you/she don’t mind sharing that would be so helpful, but no worries. thanks!

mcf11 ~

BTW just to note, she literally sent her waitlist form back as soon as she got it (I mean in the mailbox that same day!). That could have put her on the top of the pile (just a guess).

Some stats:

UW GPA - 3.65
SAT - 590M/610R (not sure of her writing score… it was low though)
Senior year courses - AP Gov, AP Lit, Honors Spanish 4, Calc 1, and some P.E. class. I don’t know exactly what she got on each one but I know she had a B- for one class and the rest A’s.
EC’s - Volunteers on Sundays at church for all kinds of outreach stuff for the past five years, yearbook staffer for two years, senior editor last year, and editor-in-chief this year.

It’s not the most impressive compared to some other students but it’s not bad at all. Hope that helps =).

returning- thank you so much for coming on here! i know a ton of us have extremely similar info to your sisters; she and i are so alike, so it is quite uplifting for me and im sure other people on here.

(i also took mine to the post office the same day i got it, maybe that will be lucky  )

mcf writes “it kind of makes sense for some people to start hearing over the next few weeks”.

Why does it make sense ?

UW have had the waitlist peoples applications now for months. They have had the waitlist acceptances for weeks. The state budget has been known for a couple of weeks at least, as have presumably all the figures with the 14% increases in them.

With all the parameters above being known, it surely can’t be beyond the admission depts talents, to have a pretty good idea of who is going to be accepted off the waitlist. If, as you surmise, they know how many people are going to accept places before May 1st , why can’t they know the same for the waitlist ?

And I also don’t see why one w/list person is obviously “first” to be notified. How can that be if there is no ranking going on ? The UW mail servers can’t handle more than one email transmission at a time ?

I hope my file is the next one to be looked at because I don’t want to be at the bottom of the pile after the all the wlist places have been filled before mine gets looked at.

And I also bring up the point of acceptance deposits for other schools. On the specific advice of UW, my parents paid two deposits to schools I have been accepted to as a safeguard. If this afternoon I get an email saying I have been accepted to UW off the w/list (my first choice) I very much doubt my parents will get those other deposits back. Bang goes $750.

If I had known that waitlist people were going to be accepted before May 1st, my parents would not have risked those deposits until they had heard definitively yes or no from UW. And it seems (from what you guess) that not all waitlisters will be told by May 1st.

If “returning” sister’s parents had paid deposits to other colleges they are in a much stronger position so say to those colleges " hey my kid’s not coming to your college, it’s April 28th, I want my deposit back"

udubwaiting-it seems like you’re almost mad that this person heard back already. i’m actually pretty excited because it means that they are confident they are gonna use the waitlist, as they said they would about a month ago. they know they are getting the tuition increases so they can keep pretty much steady enrollment, and like i said earlier i think it is because they specifically took 1000 of us who would normally get in and put us on the waitlist instead because they were not sure if they could handle the yeild they would get from those 1000 people. it just seems to make sense for them to be wanting to let us in asap, now that they know they can. i guess we will just wait and see how it turns out.

mcf11 ~ No prob… gl to you, seems like you really want this! All I know is, admissions was weird this year. She applied to BU (accepted) and Babson (rejected) and was hoping to get enough financial aid but she didn’t. That was the only way she was going to attend either one of those schools and UW was the only other school she wanted to attend so it really lifted a huge burden off her shoulders! Other than that, I believe she was looking into some cc’s and bothell campus (they were still accepting apps when she got her waitlist email) as backups.

I hope you hear some good news though =)!

udubwaiting ~ I know you’re frustrated but damn. FYI, my parents did not send in deposits to BU a) b/c they can’t afford the 30Kish tuition on top of living expenses with the little financial aid they offered and b) my sis is actually planning on working her way through college. Also, what makes you think every kid on the waitlist is even on this forum? My sister’s not even on here but I just posted this so others could sorta know what’s goin on! I was mainly the one just looking around to see what people were saying…

mcf - hey I am mad that someone else heard back first :)

I’m mad at being jerked around.

And returning tks for all the posts…they are helpful and best of luck to yr sis.

thanks, returning :)

udubwaiting- yeah i know i wish i had gotten an e-mail today too, but at least we know that they have started looking at the apps. we will hear soon enough! (though we all know that nothing is soon enough haha)
