So, if you're waitlisted, what do you think the chances of getting in are?

anyone know? thanks!

For a look at what past history has been, go to Vanderbilt’s homepage and enter Common Data Set in the search function. You want to see Section C, First Time, First Year Admissions.
Here is the link to last year’s report, but you can view a number of years to get an idea of past history. Last year’s may be more indicative of this year’s due to the spike in applications and concerns over housing freshmen in the Commons.

I was discussing this in another thread, but I think the number of waitlisted students that get in will be up significantly this year. With the sharp rise in applicants, test scores from accepted students, and the ailing economy, conditions look ripe for a low attendance rate from the accepted students. Obviously, less people will be able to afford Vandy this year. Also, I think the number of accepted students who are Ivy type (applying to 10+ schools) is up this year. That will lead to a lower yield and a high percentage of waitlisted students being offered spots.

I really hope they’ll use the waitlist more this year.

hilsa, did you get in. I have been following your replies, I hope you got in. Just came back from the mailbox, my daughter received a small envelope, looks like a deny. If you are waitlisted is there a reply card inserted inside? Anyone know?

I got waitlisted.

Yes, there is a yellow reply card that Vandy has to receive by May 1st saying whether you want to be on the waitlist or not.

I thought I would be downright denied, so I was actually very surprised about my decision. Vanderbilt rarely accepts students from my school, and when one student was accepted ED, I thought my chances were slim to none. I guess there’s some hope!

i was waitlisted, too. I was sad, but what can you do?? sorry, hilsa, and anybody else who may be slightly disappointed. at least we weren’t flat out rejected.

Hey!
does anyone know how the Carnegie Mellon Wait list works?
I haven’t received my letter yet but I got wait listed to two schools.

Hilsa. Keep fighting for the Black and Gold. The waitlist is a funny business.

I asked on another thread if you applied to the Gator nation where your passion would be welcomed.

take a look at this. should be helpful for those trying to get off the wait list

hurley: Nope. I didn’t apply to UF, though I probably would have gotten into the honors program (I think you need a 1400+ to get in). I’m just not a big fan of Gainesville. I got into FSU Honors. FSU has a better Chemistry program, and has a great film school! =]

Thanks for the link, ModernChem! =]

Hilsa: After following your postings I know that you would have been a major asset to Gator Nation but alas that will not be the case. By chance did you apply to GWU?

As far as Vandy is concerned I think the marketing campaign by admissions is top shelf but a bit transparent in that the push is obvious to accelerate a ratings bounce though the numbers and yields. Thoughts from the sunshine state?

Hilsa, My heart goes out … a lot of people are rooting for you and I feel confident you stand a great chance on the WL. My S was WLed (I’m kind of stunned) but probably will ask to be taken off.

Yep. Got into GWU. But I’m not really wanting to go there now.

Yeah, Vandy was definitely about numbers this year. But yield, I don’t think so. You can’t have both.

QUESTION TO ALL YOU PEOPLE IN WAITLIST LIMBO:
-Are you going to put yourself on the waitlist or not?

Thanks mamae! I hope I get taken off too! I’m working on ideas as to what I should do to increase my chances of getting accepted. So far I’m writing a “Why Vandy?” essay that should be very good, since I know the campus very well. I’ll think of something else later.

I am staying on the waitlist. hey, i got into fsu honors, too. Accepting the waitlist isn’t binding is it?? If you say yes to it, and get accepted, do you have to go to vandy??

How many people got on the waitlist? 7 people at my school got waitlisted (with 1350-1440 SATs and almost all 4.0 GPAs). I hope they didn’t have a waitlist of thousands upon thousands of people! I don’t like those odds!

No, accepting a spot on the waitlist doesn’t mean that if you get off it, you have to go. You can deny them.

Haha. Besides not really wanting to put myself through the stress of waiting for yet another admissions decision,
- I’d rather go to Wake Forest
- I can’t really afford Wake Forest (waiting and crossing fingers for a good finaid package), but got enough aid from UNC CH to go there.
- Going to Nashville would be kind of a pain/out of the way when my other choices are 1 hr-2.5 hrs away
- I wouldn’t want to risk taking hilsa’s spot at Vandy when she wants it so much more.
No one else at my school applied to Vanderbilt; I have doubts as to whether anyone has even heard of it.
I got waitlisted with a 2160 SAT (perfect CR), top 10%, 5 AP’s (three 5’s, don’t know about the last two), extensive community service and church involvement (including several leadership positions), 4 years of seminary classes at 6:00 in the morning every weekday (Mormon), self taught piano (and church pianist), flute, major leadership contributions to a large-ish public school in a rural county in NC, being a tutor 5 days of the week to at risk underclassmen, awesome teacher rec’s, rediculous amounts of time spent in athletics-lacrosse when my school offered it, and 3 years of cross country when I moved (we’re 5th in the state), major required senior project (children’s book…took over 60 hours), political campaign volunteer/voter registration drive, and I can’t really remember what else was on my transcript.
That said, nothing I did was aimed towards getting accepted to any college, much less Vanderbilt. I did it because I liked doing it. So no loss there.

Hilsa: The gold standard for most posts in one academic year is 936. You are on pace to decimate the record.

Glad to hear you showed some love to the Colonials even though your heart was not true to the school. xoxo

wjhsxc: Wake is the real deal. Excellent under the radar choice.

Bottom line to the couple of you still awake and on this thread is that waiting lists are up across the board this year due the economic climate. Conversely more will taken off the list than normal. So have some faith Hilsa as you claw your awy back to Nashville. Dry the tears you shed today from that pretty face!

Any final thoughts before today passes into tomorrow?
