To my knowledge, UMASS is a safety school for a lot of people, so a lot of their students end up turning them down. Do you guys think that a good amount of the waitlist will be accepted? Do you have any idea how many students in a school this size end up on the waitlist? I just don't really know what to expect...

Two years ago there were 290 that accepted a place on the waiting list, and 119 of them were later admitted. This year could be quite different of course.

In this economic environment where people do not accept an acceptance offer until they see the value in the schools education. UMass is definitely an outstanding value when compared to many local private schools and officials have a general idea of how many will enroll. It is not a safety school (at least not anymore) for most students

They calculate the enrollment/yield beforehand and admit enough people so that people who accept thier offer will fill up slightly fewer than all the seats and then take people off the waitlist to reach the enrollment target. The waitlist is probably a few hundred long (as previous poster stated) and those on the waitlist always have the option of deferring thier admissions to next spring and attending a UMass/Massachusetts State/Commmunity College for a semester to finish the gen-eds and to keep the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship (if applicable).
