THANK YOU, Rumjhum!

Response bias, people.

It’s called AP Stats and you obviously didn’t take it.

THANK YOU, Rumjhum!

Response bias, people.

It’s called AP Stats and you obviously didn’t take it.

hehe Parliament, AP Stats, greatest class ever.

Im joking of course, but I def think waitlisted people are pretty vocal right after a decision.

waitlisted as well this is so depressing…and i agree with cynical person on page 2. even if i do get accepted by some miracle, i don’t think i could afford it. criiiieeeesssss.

Waitlisted… ugh. It was my first choice. ■■■

Waitlisted here too… Although UChicago wasn’t my first choice and I already have an acceptance from Caltech, this whole waitlist from UChicago does not get my hopes up for anything other than a three-course meal of rejection from HYP.

i got waitlisted as well… i just received a likely letter from NYU stern so I’m not taking it too hard, but Chicago was higher up there for me.

Could you guys who are waitlisted post your statistics?

IT may be false hope, but false hope is better than no hope.

^^ I sure can

** Stats: **
SAT I 2300 SAT (800 Math, 780 CR, 720 W)
SAT II: 800 Math II, 800 Physics, 790 Chemistry
Other: 5x AIME, 3xUSAMO, 1xUSChO, 1x USPhO

** Subjective **
Teacher Rec (Sciences): I really don’t know, we had a fairly substantial argument (about the best way to solve a perticular Linear Algerbra problem) the day after a asked him to write it…
Teacher Rec (Non-Sciences): Haven’t seen it, but I know it’s quite good.
Con Rec: Quite effusive…
Additional Rec (Music Teacher): Her letter touched my heart…

** Essays **
Common App: Used the UChicago prompt on games as retrospective of my time in high school. It made the headmaster well up but the more I think about it it has far less effect if the reader goes in without a basic knowledge of who I am.

Why UChicago: Standard, which means it’s probably quite poor by Chicago applicant pool standards (I’m a mathematician and musician not a writing/humanities type)

Music: I poured my soul into this essay, but as it is about certain piece of music (the opening of Mahler 9) if the reader has no familiarity with the music it is a lot less effective.

Uncommon Essay: Question 5 - “In this life, you can either shut yourself up in a country house and stare into the newt-tank, or you can be a dasher with the sex. But you can’t do both.” Using that quote as a starting point I argued that intellectuallism and fun are not mutually exclusive thus disproving the “where fun to die.”

** Ethnicity **

Race: White (Italian)
School Type: Large Private school, sends about 12 to HYPSC each year on top of 65 to Oxbridge.
Location: UK

** Awards and Positions **
ASCAP Mourton Gould Award (National music award)
5x Hall Cup for Composition Winner
Awarded “colours” (equivalent to a Varsity Letter) for rowing [actually coxing but…]
Awarded the Gowers prize for top Mathematician in the school
House Captain
House Music Captain
House Academic Captain

Waitlisted! This is my first rejection so far, and its my 9th school to hear back from.
Although TheYankInLondon made me feel a little better about being waitlisted, as my stats are a bit lower.

SATs: 690 M 740CR 750W. National Merit Finalist.

I wasn’t too upset because I was never that obsessed with UChicago, but I feel like this waitlisting only foreshadows my rejections from Brown, Stanford, Princeton and Penn! Oh well, I guess I’ll be happy wherever I end up!

And yes, I agree a waitlisting is akin to a rejection, I wouldn’t hold onto too much hope that you’d still be accepted. There is a CHANCE, of course, but a slim one.

Good luck to everyone on the rest of their college responses.

DANGGGGGGGGG!!! The Yank in London you were waitlisted by Chicago??? You’re incredible!!!

@dudemancool, thats exactly how i feeellllllllll!!! same thing happened to me.

so is it true that waitlisted ppl dont get any financial aid if they somehow manage to get accepted?

waitlisted…
at least i didn’t get rejected…
well guys, i’ll see you all later at state school

^^Well, they don’t tell us what financial aid we would have gotten if we were accepted (that would have been like torture -like putting a big glass box around the school, with people cheering, eating ice cream, and waving back at you while you’re stuck on the outside, pounding, crying to be let in). But I wouldn’t be surprised if that was true.

Waitlist is not necessarily a rejection. Yes, most waitlists will not be admitted. Still, consider this: with 42% increase in apps there is no way to predict yield. All bets are off. And UChicago isn’t just looking at overall yield. They are looking at yield among mathematicians, musicians, artsists etc too. With such unpredictable yield they will use the waitlist to make sure the class both meets numbers and is well rounded. In such unpredictable application season, the best option is to admit conservatively and to rely on the waitlist later. Could this be the start of WashU like policies? Maybe, maybe not. But With a 42% increase in apps I think any admissions dean would rely heavily on the waitlist.

most people on here seems to have really good scores and others and still got waitlisted/rejected.

my friend had a 2000 on his SATs and got waitlisted. what do you think kept him on the list? do you think he has a chance of getting off of the waitlist?

Waitlisted :-

International applicant

why apply if you can’t afford? stop complaining

Also waitlisted. Thanks for the reassuring words floatingriver glad we have some semi-optimists around here.

also wait-listed,

after being deferred early action-- but hey it’s still not a rejection!
UChicago was definitely my reach school so I’m pumped that the admissions office still sees some sliver of potential within my application.

i like to think of it this way: my application will now have been read a total of 3 times (i’m most definitely getting the bang for my application fee buck)

To all the people now calling into question their future HYP decisions, don’t fret! UChicago has historically exhibited a “different” pattern of admissions so try not to take it too far to heart.
