Waitlisted??!

I just got an email from Tulane today saying that i was waitlisted. Honestly, I was shocked to hear this. I dont mean to brag, but i thought that i was well qualified for Tulane and my stats are pretty high. It is kind of making me nervous because Tulane wasn't even one of my reach school and i applied to much more selective schools. I am really worried now. Although Tulane was not my top choice, it was in my top 5/6. I'm also kind of angry because i applied with the priority app. and was supposed to get a decision a while back.

From reading some other posts i found that there were other well qualified students who were also waitlisted which also suprised me. Some people are saying that Tulane doesnt accept top students because they want Tulane to be your top choice? Is this true?

I also heard that the number of apps to Tulane were really high this year? Could this be why?
Anyone else in the same boat?
Any info would be appreciated ! :)

also, is there any way to get off the waitlist? again, although it is not my top choice, I really was considering it. i was suggested to express interest in Tulane to my couselor?

I was waitlisted too and my friend (who has very, very simmilar stats and activities) got in with a $60,000 scholarship. I didn’t send in my SAT scores though and filled it out really last minute. I wasn’t even considering Tulane, I just wanted to apply to more schools.

Now I am kind of freaking out too… I just took myself off the waitlist.

Just talk to admissions about your wait-listed status. With enough persistence, you can be accepted!

I don’t think this reflects on the rest of your results necessarily. I have heard of colleges rejecting or waitlisting someone if they thought they wouldn’t accept an offer for admission anyway.

It is going to be awhile before they take anyone off the waitlist because they need to wait and see what their yield looks like. That gives you time to see what your other results are. Maybe you’ll get accepted somewhere you wanted to go to more than Tulane anyway.

yep! It looks like a lot of people found out they were wait listed today. I know it hurts especially when you make a serious effort of showing your love for the school. I just hope that those who were accepted and have already enrolled at another school sent in their letters releasing their spot because that would help

S just got waitlisted. ACT 34, NMF, WGPA3.7, AP Scholar w/Honor, impressive ECs. Got in Chicago, BC, NYU & others. Perhaps his GPA hurt him.

He was very interested in Tulane, but would probably only have enrolled if he were offered merit money. I’ll make sure he makes his decision ASAP about whether to stay on the waitlist or not.

I am a sad camper. :frowning:

oh well, maybe Tulane’s admission staff is so awesome they could read my mind. I got into UCLA and would much rather go there than Tulane anyways.

best of luck to everyone else!

Waitlisted with a 3.6 UW GPA and 30 ACT.

I promptly declined the waitlist.

3.98 GPA, 2310 SAT, National Merit Finalist, Eagle Scout, extracurricular science class at Columbia University, Trumpet, etc. Waitlisted at Tulane. I promptly declined.

At least I am not the only one who feels they’ve been a bit cheated, but who am I to judge? I heard Tulane had a really talented pool this year, so maybe they are looking for people with demonstrated interest in the school (visiting, attending class, meeting with professors, etc.).

I think they waitlisted many applicants who were clearly overqualified (because so many people were using Tulane as a backup school) and then you could select to stay on the waitlist if you really were interested in going to the school. I was waitlisted too with a 2210 SAT, 4.4 GPA and National Merit Finalist (Tulane was kind of a whatever application for me so I declined to hold a waitlist spot…) Basically I think if you have high stats and say yes to the waitlist, you have a good chance of getting in.

Tulane was my top school after being waitlisted at Wash U. 1930 SATs, 29 ACT, 4.2 Weighted GPA (Top 3% of class), Spent a semester in Israel, Editor of the School Newspaper (plus a thousand ECs), Graduated early, and was in contact with my Admissions officer about planning a trip to visit. Waitlisted. I’m upset. I accepted the spot and emailed my Admissions officer. I guess we’ll see. Does anyone know if I am accepted off the waitlist, can I still get scholarships and financial aid? Cause that’s a deciding factor.

From what I have seen from cc and speaking to other prospective students at honors weekend, the applicants this year were highly qualified. I think part of the deciding factor, not unlike many other schools, was demonstrated interest, or something to set you apart from the other applicants. I definitely don’t think that they just waitlisted overqualified applicants, for my stats were about equal or better to the ones I have seen that were waitlisted. I believe that the difference was that I showed interest, as Tulane is my number one school, above other “higher ranked” schools which I have been accepted to or am awaiting a decision from.

For those of you that do want to attend, I would contact your admissions counselor and advise them of that. For those who have no desire to attend, promptly decline the waitlist offer. Good luck!

It stuns me a lot as well as I see that Payfor’s son and Maybachman both have stellar numbers and yet they’re now placed in the waitlist!

It seems clear to me that this waitlisting of stellar students is a combination of 1) the record number of applications; 2) a high percentage of students accepting offers of admission early; and 3) not wanting to take a chance of having too many matriculating students by offering admission to students that clearly seem to be using Tulane as a safety because they have top 20 school type stats, apply, but show no other interest.

While I know some of your egos might be bruised by getting waitlisted at Tulane (and I don’t mean that in a negative way, mine probably would be too if I were in your shoes), look at it from their point of view. They really don’t want more than 1550 students probably. Even that is on the high side. Someone with stats that normally would get them into an Ivy or Chicago or Duke applies but otherwise attends no events or makes any indication that they were really keen on Tulane. They didn’t even apply for the DHS even though they have the stats. Given a seeming trend of a high yield year, what would you do in their place?

If a student really were using Tulane as a safety, as many say even as they scorn being waitlisted, then Tulane was right. No harm done except the bruised ego. But clearly, by this rationale, it isn’t about you not being a high quality student but instead is exactly the opposite. They are saying you are too high quality given that you demonstrated no strong interest. If instead Tulane is mistaken and it is a first or second choice, then you need to let them know that. Waitlisting is a way of giving a student that previously gave no indication of interest a chance to tell Tulane they are right or wrong about their intentions when they applied. What possible reason could Tulane have for NOT wanting a student with a 3.9UW, 2350 SATs and great EC’s? Of course they want you, they just want to have a better idea that you want them.

Sure they could take you knowing that there is a 90% chance you will turn them down. But with numbers that tight, a small mistake in their assumptions could lead to big problems of overcrowding. They really don’t want that, and trust me neither do you.

Just got wait-listed today. I’m actually very relieved considering I didn’t even think I’d make it this far in the game. Does anyone know about how many students are on the actual wait-list? I’ve been emailing back and forth with my Tulane rep expressing how badly I would like to go to Tulane so hoping that will help!!

4.0 UW 4.31 W 29 ACT, Drama Club, Art Club, Philosphy Club, French Club, Service Club, and Library tutor. Waitlisted, accepted, but annoyed, considering how they begged me to apply. Rejected from UCLA, now I’m worried for the college I actually want to go to.

3.97/4.00 GPA, 2100 SAT, 32 ACT, national hispanic scholar, tons of EC’s, state-level athlete, and I’m waitlisted. After all of those emails begging me to apply! I was even born in new orleans. Jeez. I come home to an email saying I’m waitlisted at tulane of all places RIGHT after some woman barbarically and accidently butchered my bangs at the hairdresser, got a flat tire on the way home, and am trying to get over being really sick for my birthday weekend. Thanks life, love you too.

I have been following the Tulane talk for a number of weeks as my daughter has been accepted by Tulane and I believe it is one of her top two choices. I must say to “fallenchemist” that I applaud the fantastic job that you do in helping people learn more about your alma mater. I am taking your ongoing counsel into consideration as I formulate my own POV on what school would be best for my daughter. We will be visiting Tulane in a couple of weeks to give my daughter a look at the campus so she can get a fell for how she might fit in. I think the POV that fallenchemist is expressing above–high ACT applicants being waitlisted because Tulane may feel it’s not the #1 choice–is spot on. I should think, as suggested, that a direct appeal to the school: “please take me off the wait list and accept me because Tulane is my dream school” could be effective…

@KY Crusader - Thank you for the kind words. I hope you and your D have a great visit to NOLA and Tulane.

For those of you that characterized Tulane as “begging” you to apply: My own characterization of what they send would be “strongly urging”, but this is a case where perception is certainly reality. I know that they send those e-mails and marketing materials to thousands of students. I also know that these days schools ranging from some top 15’s to others not even on the charts use these aggressive marketing tactics. The fact that Tulane continues to see stronger interest and improving class profiles every year says it is working for them, but these are topics that have been discussed on other threads. My point is that the big picture, which a high school student would have no reason to see, is that these tactics are used a lot and knowing that, one takes it in context. Many students, not surprisingly, don’t know that and instead feel that they have been singled out as a special case, and that the school sending them the information has almost invited them to go to school there already. Intellectually they may know that isn’t the case, but emotionally during these exciting times it is easy for a high school senior to take the solicitation in an overly optimistic way. I suppose as these tactics become more common and people see it all the time, they will know it is not to be taken quite that way, but of course the marketing itself will become less effective.

I am sorry for your disappointment, it is really unfortunate at this stressful time in your life. It will all work out of course, and you will end up having a great college career someplace wonderful. This is one of those situations where I don’t blame Tulane or the other schools for doing what they are doing to insure the best students are aware of Tulane/their school and making it as easy to apply as possible, but I can’t blame the students that feel the results are incongruous with the process.

Waitlisted as well, after being deferred from EA. I’m actually relieved and pretty pleased with it. I thought for sure I would be rejected because so many things have gone wrong with my application. I feel good about it. Not as good as I would have had I been accepted, but certainly better that I would had I been denied. Obviously, I accepted my place right away; Tulane is my dream school. I’ve been in pretty much constant contact with my adcom and I’ll remain so. I realize that it’s probably a total crapshoot, but I’ll just try to be optimistic. :)

Full ride and early acceptance to Vandy and deferred > waitlisted at Tulane…whaaat?
