Waitlisting a discussion?

I'm in a dilemma right now. I want to sign up for a discussion that is 22/22, but there are other discussions as well that have plenty of seats. The discussion I want fits in really well with my schedule. The lecture is at 137/215 right now. This is for Physics 7A.

Should I waitlist for the discussion that I want, or should I sign up for another discussion?

Thanks.

Generally, and by this I mean REALLY overgeneralizing, each class has a 10% drop rate.

SO!
If you’re number one or two on the waitlist for PHYS 7A, GO FOR IT!
Otherwise, you’re fer sure outta luck. Even if you’re number two there’s no good chance you’re getting into a discussion that small in such a good class.

I’m going through the same thing with CS 61A and Math 53. Ugh.
Why can’t they just offer good classes at good times?

yeah. currently there is no one on the waitlist right now. But how screwed would i be if i no one dropped since the discussion group is full of smart people?

Well, lets say no one at all drops it.
What do you have to lose? Your other option is pretty open, right?
Can’t really go wrong switching to a less favorable discussion later if it means that you might get the one you want.

But what the discussion that I am currently in gets filled up? Then my schedule would be really bad. Also, on the online schedule it says that this course does not use an online waiting list. So its not even possible to get this discussion?

Oh, in that case you’re not sitting too good.

And from the looks of it, no.
No waiting list is a no go. Lame. =[

Don’t give up hope! There’s always phase two and the adjustment period.

So what can i do during phase 2 or the adjustment period? I planned my schedule so that i can easily switch sections in case the opportunity arises, but how will i get this spot once someone drops? Would i go through tele-bears or talk to the gsi/???

if someone drops it, there should be an open spot, so you can just grab it.
You could always be like me and practically stalk telebears haha

Guys, guys. Just so you guys know, physics classes at Cal are heavily impacted and they’re pretty hard to get into. Furthermore, they don’t use waitlists. Feel lucky that you’re even able to sign up as an incoming freshman, since for many people, the class they want fills up before their Phase I even rolls around. And Tele-BEARS is the only way you will be able to sign up for 7A; the professor and GSIs will not be able to help you out here.

As killthefifi said, if you want, you could monitor the available spots, although I suggest you use ESC or schedule.berkeley.edu - you may have to refresh the ESC class page though, since it gets information from the schedule.berkeley.edu website which is not up-to-date to the minute. Tele-BEARS has some restrictions on how many times you can log on during each phase and such, so you probably don’t want to be logging on all the time, although you could just refresh it every ten minutes so it doesn’t time out on you.

Finally, Physics is an Early Drop Deadline class, which means you’re not allowed to drop past the second week of class. Unless someone doesn’t show up to every single one of their discussions, you’re probably out of luck, as the drop deadline occurs before you learn or do anything significant and it’s a lower-division general requirement for CoE/CoC, so it’s filled with people needing to take it as a prereq for their majors. In short, just sign up for the discussion that’s not full. If you notice someone’s dropped from the discussion you want, you can just switch it on Tele-BEARS and thank your lucky stars.
