Waitlists and all...

So my Phase II is next Tuesday (does this make any sense? I got 9 units from college work before the fall, am taking 17 units right now, and have 30.5 units worth of AP credit). I'm hoping to enroll in Math 54. There are seats left for Lott's lecture. However, all discussion sections are full. Moreso, there are 30 people in the waitlist for the lecture section (because people waitlist for the discussion sections), and the limit on this waitlist is 30.

For Hald's section (for whose lecture I have three possible discussions to choose from: 8 AM, 3:30, and 5), the situation's pretty much the same, except with 20 people on the lecture waitlist.

Am I screwed? I seriously think Berkeley has simply just left me behind on the dirt road to rot with this semester's Telebears...

BTW: I currently don't have a heart for the Summer Sessions. I was already in a summer class this summer, and took summer classes before. I kind of want a freer summer, or one where I can do an internship or research, or be able to do activities such as counseling for a summer camp.

And I also should add that those who get the worst Telebears get cheated three/fourfold. Not only do they get late Telebears for both phases (so that they have little chances for getting ANY of their classes, rather than, what, half), but they have much shorter open hours too! I swear, I signed up for Chem 4B and a physics class that doesn't fill up as quickly as Physics 7A/B, but doesn't have any waitlists (so that was kind of an exclamation mark for me). However, I found out how slowly the class filled up. I tried to switch out of the physics class and get into Math 54, but my open hours ended when other people's Phase II appointments started. FML

Is there anyone above who can help me with this situation (like professors, advisors, administrative... WHATEVER, ANYONE WHO CAN HELP), or is this an instance where once Berkeley accepts you, they leave you in the cold?

You should be able to get into Hald’s lecture if you sign up for one of his open sections. There are ~20 people on the waitlist because they’re waitlisting full discussion sections.

The only way to get good telebears is to take enough units to bump you up into the next level, which are at every 30 units, so 0-30 = freshman, 30-60 soph, etc.

These lower-div math classes tend to accept almost everyone who tries to sign up because everyone in CoE, CoC needs to take them for their major. Don’t fret; your best bet is to monitor Tele-BEARS everyday to check for open seats due to people dropping.

If you don’t have the patience for this, or don’t care as much, a large amount of people drop math during the first five weeks, so if you are waitlisted for a discussion section, just attend class and do the homework and quizzes alongside the regularly enrolled people, and you’ll almost certainly get in. There’s no way you’ll not get into a discussion section eventually, though it’s not guaranteed that it will fit into your schedule. And as stly said, taking more units, whether through heavier semester loads, summer sessions, or CC, will give you an earlier Tele-BEARS appointment. This is something you have total control over.

Are your units processed on your BearFacts already?

anon5524485: I got all that info from “All Grades” on BearFacts.

AppleJuice: I’ve also heard (from that one CC threat about Telebears, I bet) how the amount of AP units you have can boost you up within your class level. Anyway, what’s peculiar is that some people who never had community college credit had earlier Telebears times than I had. I’m sure residency has nothing to do with this (my residency status was pending for the first half of the semester, but now am considered to be a CA resident), as I know OOS students who had earlier Telebears times than I had (then again, it’s kind of repetitive to say that, as everyone has an earlier appointment time than I do). Well… I’m an idiosyncrasy. Or that’s just life (not that that’s the first thing I’d want to hear from friends).

Grr… I have to fight my way into Math 54. -__- The lecture waitlists for both Hald and Lott are full. When do they start to open sections? Arg, should’ve signed up for it during Phase I (it’s a long story involving a Math GSI and a Physics class that I thought would get filled up quickly…). However, I really do need to take Math 54, as my physics class that I’ve enrolled in requires it.

^same situation as you. they just need to open more spots on the lecture waitlist, since the discussion waitlists still have room. will they do that or do I need to live on telebears waiting for people to drop?
