Waitlists despite the class not being full?

I'm assuming there's something going on with reserved spots, but how can we know if there's room for us in a class?

I'm a psychology major (transfer student). I wanted to add PSYCH 150 in phase II. I already added two psychology classes, though. I know they reserve spots for transfer students and for psychology majors in general, but since I already have some psychology classes, are those only reserved for students who haven't gotten any yet? Or are spots reserved for any psychology major? I did submit my form to declare psychology as a major at CalSo, but I doubt it went through already. Does that make a difference?

There are 157/206 enrolled and 100 on the wait list for PSYCH 150. Is it full? What about PSYCH 110 with 230/300 enrolled and 122 on the waiting list? Should I come up with a few back-up classes that don't have waitlists in case I can't add either of those? Is there a way to see if the class is actually full before my phase II date?

Thanks!

You can check on your bearfacts whether you’re officially “declared.” The spots reserved Psych majors only applies to students who are officially declared. If you sign up for the class and are placed on the wait-list, you can be cleared by the professor (or major advisor depending on how it works for the Psych department) to be let into the class. Students majoring in that department will be given priority for the remaining seats but I’d have a few back-ups if there is a huge wait-list.

Oh, thank you! I’m listed as undeclared. I do know they also save spots for transfers in upper division psych classes even though we obviously don’t have time to declare our majors, they told us so at CalSo. I don’t know if that applies to phase II as well. I guess I’ll try come up with backups, then. Thank you!

What exactly is a huge waitlist, though, when it comes to classes with 200 or 300 spots?

The rule of thumb is that if you’re in the top 20% of a waitlist, you’ll probably get in. You could check with the psych department to see if you have a realistic chance of getting off the waitlist. If the waitlist is manual, and you’re definitely intending to do psych, then you could probably make a case with the department. Anyway, it doesn’t hurt to have one or two backups :)

Okay, cool, good to know. Thanks! I submitted my petition to declare my major already, so it’s definitely what I’m doing! Should I add a class to make sure I have the required units, get on the waitlist for PSYCH 150, and then drop the back-up class if I get in?

As long as you drop before the deadline, there’s no harm in doing so.

Cool. Thanks. :)
