Waitlists, Holds & Defferals etc. 2020

Friend of mine just got a “hold” from CCM I am super proud of him! Anyone else with hold/WL stories, feel free to post the news.

Just curious as to how CCM notifies folks. My daughter auditioned at NY Unifieds and it’s been crickets.

If it’s like prior years, check the U of Cincinnati portal. In the past people have had no change in status whatsoever while everyone was hearing something so it seemed like an unofficial deferral of sorts.

Thanks, I just checked. Nada. I’ll take no news as good news LOL.

I would say no news is good news if you auditioned more than a week ago. At auditions, CCM said that decisions would be posted on admission portal by the end of the week after you auditioned, unless your application materials are not complete (like transcripts, test scores, recommendations) and you would get an email that decision was posted. They also said the Accepted and Denied will appear where the U of C application is listed and the Hold will appear where the CCM application is listed. Your application materials all have to be ready for admissions review before the application can be reviewed by Admissions Committee and results of Committee decision posted, so if you have anything outstanding, that would delay the decision from being posted. Although for Denied they don’t go to the Admission Committee so those results will probably appear by the end of the week if the timing they shared holds true.

Wow that’s inferesting! So you’re saying if you are Denied the application does not have to be complete for that decision to be released? @MTMom98

CCM said that to go to the admission committee, your application materials have to be complete. But, she added that if your audition decision is Deny, you will be denied and those denied decisions do not go to the admission committee for review. So assuming that application materials are needed for committee, it would seem like you wouldn’t need application materials to be complete to receive denial. But, I do not know for sure.

S auditioned at NY Unifieds. His status under Undergrad Applications says “Applied” and under CCM says " Applied" and then under Decisions says “Audition Scheduled” and still has the NY Unifieds info on it. And we’re going on the 2 week mark. So, under decisions it may eventually says Accepted, Hold, or Denied??? And they email, you too? And what is the difference between, Hold, Deferral and Waitlist (I know what waitlist means…)

^This is what I brought up on the CCM thread. Ours is still the same as well. We know people who heard yes right away, no right away, their portal changed, and they got an email. And then people like us who have heard nothing. So we are guessing as well it is some sort of deferral.

Hold means they aren’t sure about your decision yet but are still considering you among applicants, Waitlist means a group of people lined up incase their initial offers decline, and defferal means they aren’t ready to offer you a sure answer at the time. (I Think) defferal is a strange wording for that lol.

Maybe someone will have a better definition of defferal because I kind of don’t understand that one very well.

Yes, what’s listed as decision on application will change in the portal. The email simply informs you that the decision is now available on portal. For CCM, Hold is the same as deferred at other schools - it means you are still being considered, they aren’t ready to make a decision until they see other auditions. If you haven’t heard, clearly you’re still being considered which is great.

I also auditioned at NY Unifieds and nothing has been posted so far. It just says applied…however something tells me that they haven’t started reviewing NY Unifieds videos yet because a friend of mine who auditioned 3 weeks ago just got her hold today and I have yet to hear about someone from Unifieds who has heard at all so far.

In my experience, CCM was the most prompt about delivering decisions. D was told on hold pending completion of LA Unifieds within a couple days of her audition. She was accepted by email the week after the Unified auditions were complete.

I have a general question about waitlists/holds/whatever…perhaps not just CCM but I know they are a hugely difficult admit for MT. I am just wondering if anyone has any insight if the decision makers/Mt admission faculty take much from your resume/ theater experience into consideration for whittling down these offers? Like say they thought your songs were great and you were awesome in your monologue…I know in some instances they also might need your type perhaps…My D was asking me and I could not tell her really. I know your audition has to be great and sound great but I am sure a lot of kids have great auditions…what else is going into the decision to make someone an offer? or to put them on hold/deferred? The audition is such a small period of time. My D is auditioning for a summer program & she sang her cuts for me last night…I never realized how truly short they are. I know in a summer program they have far less kids applying and can look over your resume etc but college auditions seems like it would be not enough to just go by the audition and whether someone is attractive…I know someone said the person knows in a few seconds whether you can sing…but it has to be about more then that…

@theaterwork I wonder the same thing a lot. In addition, as somebody brought up somewhere else, there is sometimes only one auditor. How does she/he make any sort of objective/comprehensive assessment of candidates she/he sees and compare what other auditors see? I guess it is what it is, fair or not fair.

@theaterwork, I wonder obsessively about things like that! For instance, should I send an updated resume to places that have not yet made a decision? Also, do the family’s finances get taken into account? I’m betting they would rather give a spot to a person who seems like they could pay full tuition rather than to one who needs scholarship. That’s especially true if the talent scholarship fund is running dry. From previous experience, I know that certain schools do not give ANY talent scholarship to kids they take off the wait list. That’s a good question to ask as soon as you are wait-listed, rather than waiting to ask once you have an offer in hand.

The most important thing in college auditions is how you perform in the room (except for schools like NYU who look at academics, too). I’ll tell this story again: I know a girl who did ONE high school show in a tiny town in the deep south. Nothing else. She graduated from Juilliard. If you wow them in the audition, they will want you. If you don’t wow them, they won’t. They aren’t going to accept a child who doesn’t wow them just b/c the resume is impressive. In fact, if the audition isn’t great, and the resume is spectacular, they may wonder about the disconnect.

SO many of these auditors say they know within the first 10 to 30 seconds whether they are interested or not. They know what they are doing. I’m not saying the resume is unimportant…but if you’re not fabulous in the room, you’re not going to get in. If they don’t see talent or oodles of potential or something they want, you’re not going to get in.

I think those of us have been through this with our kids have learned that somehow, the process works. These auditors know what they are doing. Do they make mistakes? Sure. But the vast majority of time, they get it right. Somehow.

My daughter has a “hold” from CCM (she is tech not performance); had her portfolio review at CCM on Jan. 16.

Well I wonder what you tell the kid who auditions for 10 /12 programs and doesn’t get into ANY of them… they of course are going to question their choice of major. Do you tell that kid that they just didn’t " wow" the auditors … any of them…
I know there is so much competition. Guess I’m just getting paranoid about next year. But I know I know… Just make sure you love your safety…
