So I was randomly looking at the Berkeley online schedule of classes. I plan on coming in as a Media Studies or Poli Sci major. Anyways, I'm a little confused on how the waitlists work. In the Media Studies 10 Class (which is required for MS majors) it says there are 225 seats available but there is still a waitlist of 18 people. Can someone explain how this works?

Some classes have restrictions on who can enroll, e.g. declared majors, juniors/seniors etc. Click on the link that says “Click here for current enrollment information and course restrictions” under the description for each class for more information.

For Media Studies 10,
Seats have been reserved for:
Instructor Approval; a Class Entry Code is required to enroll in these seats. (Open)
Students in the College of Letters and Science and Students with a class level of Sophomore (Open)

So freshmen and others who do not satisfy the above will be placed on the waitlist even if there are still seats available.

Another situation that causes this - If you are waitlisted for a discussion section, then even though the lecture itself has room, you are automatically waitlisted for that as well.
