i am an incoming transfer student and I can either take a class that is a sure thing (i am already enrolled) or drop the class and enroll in a waitlisted class. During my tenure at city college, i never had a problem being on the waitlist as it is guaranteed that u would get in class. is it the same as is UCLA? if i put my myself on waitlist is there a good chance i might not get in? thanks!

It really depends.

What is the class?

HIST M104

[Schedule of Classes: Class Listing](http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/detselect.aspx?termsel=10F&subareasel=HIST&idxcrs=0104++M+)

o.O there are only 10 spots in that class

^ Translation: Probably shouldn’t count on it.

I dunno silvercross, unless it is a special lab or something they might let socali177 in. I really don’t see any other reason to have such a small class (especially with budget cuts).

Try to contact a counselor or the department and see what they say about the course.

You should put yourself on the waitlist in the meantime.

don’t listen to people who say you can’t get in the class. they seriously don’t know how the system works even though they’ve been here, i dont know how many quarters or years.

Here’s a tip, you can search for the room online and see that: [Humanities 169 — UCLA Office of Instructional Development](http://www.oid.ucla.edu/units/avs/buildings/humanities/humanities169)

the room capacity is 115. there is no reason that you shouldn’t get in. you might be on the waitlist if you register in that section, but if you register in what it’s crosslisted as, the other name of the course (courses that have M before them have other sections in other departments), you’ll see that there are plenty of spots open and you’re guaranteed a spot.

I’m not sure of your major, but they should allow it, because either way its the same thing on your dpr.

From my experience:
GEs - Mostly accept waitlist students
Impacted Courses - Cannot accept waitlist students (though lists usually clear up in the first few weeks)

@therealist

You have a really good point but the thing I don’t understand is why there is a capacity of 10 students in a room built for 115. Your argument might work for classes with 80 or 90 spots (since then there’d be space for them in the class) but not for this one because there are so few spots in the enrollment.

i make perfect sense.

the class is crosslisted. there is another title for the class that has the max set at 100.

I missed the fact that it was cross-listed. :P

In that case, 100 + 10 = 110 spots in the class, not including the wait-list. So I guess they might let a few of them in.

“From my experience:
GEs - Mostly accept waitlist students
Impacted Courses - Cannot accept waitlist students (though lists usually clear up in the first few weeks)”

I think this is true in general. But I’ve been in impacted courses that offer PTE numbers. I believe it depends on the department.
