Is it possible to do this? I'm going to Pasadena City College tomorrow to take the Accuplacer, and I'm worried that I won't score high enough in the math section to get into calculus because I forgot a lot of my math stuff. I took, and passed math analysis (pre-calculus) in high school with a B+, so that should make me eligible for calculus. If I bring my transcript to a counselor, would they let me skip the lower level math courses (assuming I did score low on the Accuplacer)?

well how low are you planning to score?

I have no idea. Let’s just say pretty low. :p

I’m at Pasadena City College too. I’m pretty sure your high school transcript wont matter. I was in your situation 2 years ago and they still made me take the placement test.

You can get lucky by talking to a counselor, explaining your situation (how you passed pre-cal in high school, need this course for transfer, etc) and they may just place you into a calculus class. I have a number of friends that were successful with this.

By the way, if you forgot a lot of math, I HIGHLY suggest that you just do the best you can on the placement test and get into calculus the old-fashioned way. Math classes, especially at PCC, arent something to be taken lightly. Even though I passed pre-calc in high school, I took it again my 1st semester at PCC and had a strong foundation for calculus.

PCC rocks…
Math department in PCC is very strong, meaning it is not easy.
I think you should just study hard for the test. No matter what the outcome is, you can still move up the ladder pretty quick.
I knew someone who started Math 131 (Intermediate Algebra) and finished Differential Equations within two years.

Good Luck!

theres a very good reason why they make you take the placement tests…
