Waiving Rights to Access Recommendations

This is probably a question asked before, but is it better to check off yes or no for the FERPA rights to see my letters of recommendation afterwards, or does it just not matter what I pick? I thought I remember reading somewhere that it's better to check off Yes, but my mom (who pretty much knows nothing about college stuff but she could be right for all I know) wants me to check off No.

Check yes.

By waiving your rights, teachers can write recommendations without you having knowledge of what they wrote (which could be good or bad, but usually good).

If you check no, then you’re allowed to see what your teachers write, and both the teachers and the colleges you’re applying to will know that you have the ability to access them. Therefore, college admissions officers will weigh your recommendations lower because they know that you can indirectly influence what your teacher writes about you.

Yes, waive the right

Note that checking yes does not mean that you cannot see the letters. Your teachers may show them to you voluntarily. All it means is that you cannot go into the Admissions Office and demand to see them.

The colleges will assume that your teachers will be more free to express their true opinions if you waive the rights.
