waiving rights to recommendations?

Hi, I had a question on why there are college applications out there that ask if you would like to waive your rights to viewing a teacher recommendation (the one below is from MIT):

"Sign your name below only if you agree to voluntarily waive your right of access to review this recommendation."

What is this all about? Will there be repercussions if I don't sign this part of the recommendation? What are the benefits of signing/not signing? What kind of scenarios might occur?

More importantly, what did you guys do?

i would recommend waiving it.

<a href="http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/archives/000299.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/archives/000299.htm</a></p>

yes waive it

If you don't sign it, when you get to the college, you can go to the admissions office and demand to see the letters. If you sign it, you no longer have that right.

Some schools will consider recommendations to be more honest if the student has waived the right to demand to see it.

Now, none of this means that a teacher cannot voluntarily show you the recommendation. It just means that you can't demand to see it.
