Waiving SHIP

I waived SHIP for the 2007-2008 year on the student health website but when I checked my BAR account last night, I saw the $225 charge for SHIP basic. Anyone with experience waiving SHIP know if they are going to clear this before school starts?

They charge you $225, and then later they pay you $225 again to cancel it out. That's how I understand it. See if there's another transaction?

There isn't one for mine

when is the last day to waive ship?

september 20

I just waived it about 5 seconds ago... The confirmation page I printed out says, "The insurance (SHIP) fee is one of the registration fees and will appear each academic term with the assessed fees. A waiver creates a transaction to reverse this charge. It will appear as a separate line item."

• USHIP Basic does not include Dental Care benefits. This is the opportunity for Undergraduates to “buy up” to USHIP Plus. It can be purchased during the fee payment period, which ends on September 20. The undergraduate Dental Plan will require enrollment for the academic policy year or when student is first eligible. This is an online process through the web page at www.studenthealth.ucla.edu

Depressing. I didn't realize this. I have wisdom teeth that need to be pulled. And, well, they need to be pulled soon... so close to full price. Soo your teeth can rot... your eyes will wait for a month unless you schedule just about now for an early appointment in the fall or else you're screwed... you can get checked up by a registered nurse for just about everything as long at it's within 15 minutes... and you'll be alive enough to continue your studies. Oh and you can develop severe acne and get prescribed an overpriced generic 5% benzoyl peroxide as opposed to purchasing it at the drug-store for half the price... or something like that. That's SHIP Basic for you.

I'm a new student for the fall. However as I was checking the list of Ashe Center staffs, there were only MDs, nurse practitioners, pharmacists etc. So if you want to see a psychologist/psychiatrist, will you need a referral from the Ashe Center? SHIP does include mental health specialists, right? I think I remember reading it in the brochure but I am not exactly sure.

so is waving SHIP the general consensus?

i mean, i have health insurance through my parents, but i dunno where i could go close to campus to see a doctor if i have to.

It updated for my account, it's credited.

bobbak - do a search for ship and youll find a thread that lists the pros and cons of ship. In a nutshell, if you don't do anything that may injure yourself or you normally don't get sick a lot, you should waive ship. Otherwise, you may want it if you can't easily get to your hospital.

I sprained my ankle twice last year and I wish I had ship, but other than that I'm glad I waived it.

bobbak: That's something you need to figure out in order to waive ship. You need to know if your insurance plan allows you to visit a facility located within 25 miles of UCLA. Call up your ins co.

How long does it usually take the waiver to appear on your BAR account? Will it be there before the Sept. 18 deadline?

Only took them three business days for the SHIP waiver to show up on my BAR.
