Wake Forest Fall 2018 Transfer Thread

Didn’t see an existing thread, so starting one for us Fall 2018 Transfer Applicants.

Hey, I transferred in last semester. If anyone has any questions regrading the transfer process let me know!

@collegeseeker45

How do you feel being a transfer student at Wake? Has integrating into campus life been smooth?

@baedrillaurd The transfer process went smoothly for me. There were some obvious challenges, but I think they were not specific to Wake Forest, just the challenges with transferring in general.

Submitted my application last week.

Currently an out of state freshman at a University of California school.

Major: Computer Science

Current Credits: 22 Semester Units (will have around 45 by the end of spring)
College GPA (Not Including Dual Enrollment): 3.9/4
College GPA (Including Dual Enrollment): 3.81/4

High School GPA: 3.5
ACT Score - 31 Cumulative, 36 Writing, 30 English, 31 Math, 34 Reading, 28 Science

Rec Letter - 1 from my English prof, haven’t read it but I had a good relationship with them.

Essays/Extracurriculars: 8/10, I’d say pretty decent and diverse.

Ethnicity/Gender: Asian Male

Hey @collegeseeker45 I was wondering what your stats were if you feel comfortable sharing and how long did it take to get a decision after you submitted your materials?

I was also hoping you could let me know what you think my chances are!

I am from Connecticut (so out-of-state) and currently attend the University of South Carolina, Columbia. I am in my fourth semester at the university and have done well. My major at USC is Public Health. I hope to one day practice as a Physician Assistant. The courses I have taken at USC include all of the basic biology and chemistry classes, psychology courses, sociology, calculus, public health classes, English classes, etc.

College GPA: 4.0 cumulative
I will have 60 credits at the end of this semester.
High school GPA: 3.7 (did not do well my first two years, but my GPA was a 3.9 and a 4.0 my junior and senior years)
my high school was very competitive and is known for its very difficult curriculum
SAT: not submitting my scores

College ECs:
-Member of the Public Health Society
-Floor Representative for my residence hall
-A member of CHAARG (a club that aims to get college-aged women excited about living a healthy lifestyle)
-A member of the USC Love Your Melon Campus Crew

High School ECs:
-Captain of my high school mock trial team
-Awarded the most outstanding attorney award in the mock trial program
-Captain of the empire mock trial team (more competitive, competes nationally)
-President of the Red Cross Club
-Played softball

Outside of the classroom:
-Work 30 hours a week on breaks at a local medical office as a medical assistant
-Work and Volunteer at a local preschool/daycare center

I had my Public Health professor write my letter of recommendation. Last semester, I faced serious health problems that prevented me from attending my classes for more than half of the semester. Instead of taking a medical withdrawal, I completed all of my coursework from my apartment. I managed to complete the semester maintaining my 4.0 GPA while taking 5 classes. My final grade in my public health class was a 100%, so the letter should be good.

@alliezannino Your stats seem to blow my stats out of the water when I applied to transfer. My high school stats were far inferior to yours and I got in. So my advice would be to make sure your common app essays are perfect. Spend some time doing them because they can make or break your application. In my common app essay I clearly articulated why I wanted to transfer to Wake. I gave specific reasons, while still crafting an interesting essay. If you do the essays and free responses well, I don’t see why they would reject you. Those are my thoughts though, take them with a a grain of salt.

Anybody know when we can expect a decision?

@LookAtMe looking at last year’s thread, I think we can expect decisions to start rolling out in 2-3 weeks time (and continue on)

@collegeseeker45 Thank you so much for responding! That makes me feel a lot better while we’re waiting to get our decisions

Major: business (finance)
GPA:3.8
college: CC in Washington state
tests scores: never took any
honors: PTK, faculty honors every quarter (except the last one), presidents honors last quarter
achievements: started and grew a profitable service company at the age of 21. It did about 10k a month in sales with good margins., I’ve been to 9 countries including Asia. HS golf captain, I’ve played electric and acoustic guitar for 8 years.
Essay: I think it was good. I highlighted my recent experiences and my early struggles with academics.
recommendation: it is very long and over all very complimentary, but one part where she mentions I’m not the greatest writer. She didn’t say I was bad, but mentioned not being the strongest at it.
I’m a unique student. I’m 24, took time off school (I was an average student in HS). Started a company and traveled the world.

So I submitted my app months ago, but was not able to submit the application fee and ACT scores until today, do you think they will count it against me?
Here are my stats btw, I do not feel very confident
I did one semester at UNC Asheville and left the University

College GPA:

Hey I’m transferring out of WFU if anyone has questions about the school.

@byebyewfu if you don’t mind me asking, why are you leaving Wake?

Wake is a very homogenized environment. From the beginning, it was difficult to find an array of people. Truly there is beyond a lack of non-white 1% kids. I am not a minority, but that diverse environment was somewhat promised to me by this school when I talked to admissions about attending, and it did not deliver in the slightest. There is a lack of school spirit. Attending sporting events is not something it is at most schools. Kids barely go and leave often quite early. Greek life is very very very large here. If I had to ballpark it, I would say over 80% of this campus is involved in it. (whether that be standard Greek life, business/service frats, Divine Nine) If you are not involved in it, it is challenging for you to find a place here. Within Greek life, there are great social rankings that start to define you as an individual to others on campus. Academically, Wake Forest is stellar. They check every box for me. But once you analyze the social scene and culture of the school, the greatness of Wake diminishes quickly. It breaks my heart to leave the professors I love, but it is too much to stay here. Wake is not the school for you if you do not like to go out (primarily go out a lot), want to stay away from Greek life, want a variety of individuals and cultures to become immersed in, and want a welcoming college town. I have personally never felt safe in Winston Salem, and I am from a city. There is no school spirit amongst the town, and it lacks in appeal there as well. Yes, we are close to Charlotte, but beyond that, there is not much going on around here. So if you don’t party, there are not many options off campus besides seeing a movie or going to Charlotte for a concert. Overall, I have been incredibly disappointed in this institution, how they have handled acts of racism, a person being shot and killed this semester on campus, how they handle Greek life issues, etc, etc. I hope this attempts to answer anything for you.

@byebyewfu what year are you in school? Good luck to you in your future endeavors…

Anyone got any updates?

@nohrdragon noope, nothing new :confused:

I didn’t get my decision until May

Nothing here either., I’m expecting we won’t hear for at least a week or two
