Wake Forest Full Ride vs. NC State Park Scholarship

As a freshman, you can actually take out $5500 in Direct Loans, but only $3500 is subsidized.

$2,700** for work study

Doesn’t the Park Scholarship have a specific in-state/out-of-state breakdown? I think a certain number are reserved for North Carolina residents. So to really get a picture of your chances you’d need to know that breakdown, and an approximate idea of how many invited candidates are in-state. It could be your chances are better than the 35 out of 100 would indicate.

Some of these schools are CSS Profile schools.

If you don’t get Park at NCSU, would you be awarded any other merit? What does the NPC show on NCSU’s website? What about the NPC on UNC’s website?

I think that if you run the NPCs on each school’s (UNC, NCSU, WF) website, copy/paste the results here, we can figure out which one (park or WF) you should interview for.

Some additional food for thought and further research:

According to WF’s website, “The Stamps Leadership Scholar Award is awarded to approximately five entering first-year students,” 5 as opposed to the 12 mentioned by OP. Something to check out as it affects odds substantially.

WF award recipients “may receive up to $15,000 total over their four undergraduate years for approved travel or study projects.” Wow! Also there is “an extra $500 allowance for expenses related to one semester at a Wake Forest overseas program.” Doesn’t sound too “vague” to me and I couldn’t find much in the way of specifics concerning the “extras” included in NC"s award. Maybe OP has more details.

I would want to know more about just what the weekend selection entails and on this score only NC was forthcoming. (I think of course you should consider yourself being evaluated the entire weekend regardless of what exactly you’re doing)

At NC State, there will be “two assessments: a group discussion activity and an interview with two to four faculty and alumni.”

Oh wow. That makes a huge difference, particularly since the OP doesn’t seem to have distinguished himself enough to be one of the chosen 5.

Here, I will share the email from Wake with you. This is not just the Stamps, but several 12 full rides given out under various names, including Stamps.

"Every year, Wake Forest invites roughly twenty four students on to campus to interview for one of our total cost of attendance scholarships which will be worth approximately $250,000 US for the next four years. These scholarships cover tuition, room and board as well as $1,500 per year for books and other incidentals. For the last several year, we have offered approximately twelve of these scholarships (under various names like Reynolds and Stamps) to the finalists that we met on campus, and I believe that we will offer a comparable number this year.

This week, the scholarship committee has selected you to be one of the twenty four finalists. Our Scholarship weekend occurs on our campus from the afternoon of Thursday, February 18 (4 pm check-in) through the morning of Sunday, February 21. During that time, finalists will live in the dorms on campus with a current scholarship student, be interviewed by the scholarship committee, and have the chance to attend classes and experience Wake Forest life. We will also provide all transportation and meals once your reach the campus. The weekend promises to be both challenging and rewarding. While you are here, we encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to get to know our professors and students. As part of the interview process, you will have a faculty appointment, an interview with a single committee member, and two individual interviews each with one half of the scholarship committee). It is important that you maintain focus during the various interview formats, but we expect that you will enjoy your time on campus as well.

Wake Forest does not offer a gap year possibility with these scholarships (and we would ask that you decline attending the scholarship competition if you intend to take a gap year in order to provide another student the opportunity to attend this weekend), but these scholarships do include additional funding for approved summer research (often completed in international locations) for each summer between your freshmen and senior year."

See which school might offer a phone interview. I’ll bet you are not the only one who might have a conflict.

Is this the first year that Wake and NC State have had this conflict?

I am going to contact both schools and discuss it with them!

Typically for these generous , named scholarships the schools require attendance to be eligible . They are very competitive and will offer to someone else that can fully participate. That’s been my experience in the past, but I have no experience with Wake specifically.

I’m sure you have to be present to compete for these. My son is doing one of these full scholarship weekend deals ad they are very clear that you must be available on specific dates or drop out now. Once you are selected for the applicant pool grades and scores don’t matter anymore since everyone will be qualified. Do you think you interview well? Are you outgoing? I would think because Wake is a higher rated school that the competition would be stiffer but the potential award greater. Even if you are not in the top 12 there will certainly be others who are awarded who decide to go elsewhere and they probably have less than full scholarships to offer as well.

@nextMEDstudent First off, congratulations! All the schools you mentioned are excellent schools where you would be, no doubt, successful.

Second, disclaimer is that I went to Wake, so I will naturally have some bias, but it is not my intent to be biased in any comments.

Third, I myself went through several of these similar weekends ten years ago and, I would say it’s fair to be there in presence for the school that you are most attracted to and/or feel you are least competitive for. That said, I would not necessarily use the cost of attendance to determine that though. Bottom line is that these schools most likely all want you and will probably try to leverage scholarship as best possible to attract you, so hopefully that will be true. TO give my own personal example, although I did not receive one of the scholarships you are competing for at Wake (there were sadly many fewer then…), they were able to give a competitive offer that although not as good as other offers, was good enough for me to take that option. @dcplanner is right that there is more money than just these twelve, that should also assuage the concerns for students who were not invited to this weekend, lots folks got scholarship at WFU who were not at that weekend, and some may have ven gotten full rides between aid and merit, so if anyone is in that situation don’t panic!
I loved that weekend, I had previously not wanted to go to Wake and that weekend shifted my opinion so, another way to think about the weekend is to use it to test how much/how little you like a school. Bottom line is, you’ll clearly be successful wherever you go. The last thing I’ll note is that I kn

It doesn’t surprise me that these interviews are on the same weekend. Sometimes that is the strategy…forces the participants who’ve been invited to both to “pick a side”.

Since you live in the state, do you think you’ll have $800-900 in travel expenses??

Are these schools on the semester system or quarter system?

My EFC is $14,800 per year, and my parents really cannot afford to pay any more than that, because that alone is going to be a major adjustment

I’m leaning towards the Wake interview. My other concern is that NCSU seems to be very STEM oriented (maybe that’s a wrong feeling), but you’re an IR, PolySci/business major.

Sometimes you just have to take a chance. Go with the school you want the most. You can always work out study abroad, can apply for internship or work during the year.
