My D has narrowed down her college choices to UVA or Wake Forest. She is tentatively premed, ranked in top 5% of HS school class, aptitude for science. Looking for school spirit, happy student body, good advising and of course good academics. Any input would be appreciated.

Hi, @catmac:

I looked at both UVA and Wake Forest and applied to both. I was OOS for UVA and was rejected; if I had been accepted, it would have been a hard decision for me, but I probably would have still chosen Wake.

UVA is bigger than Wake. Both have a strong Greek presence, beautiful campuses, and great two year undergraduate business programs. One of my good friends goes to UVA and is pre-med – he likes the program there.

I would tend to believe that, since Wake is so much smaller, advising would be more personal. I have a great relationship with my business adviser here at Wake, and I think most students would tend to agree that advising is personalized and beneficial. You are going to get great academics and a happy student body at both; I think that the students who attend these schools are similar.

For me, what it came down to was general feel. I liked the Wake atmosphere better. At UVA, I thought the dining hall food was honestly repulsive. My tour guide told me that the dining hall turned her into a vegetarian… here at Wake the food is actually pretty good (and there are also a lot of vegetarian options if meat isn’t your jam). A lot of students apply to both schools though and you really can’t go wrong.

If you have any more specific questions, please feel free to PM me. Best of luck to you & your daughter! Not a bad choice to be making.

Hi catmac,

UVA and Wake are very similar institutions. I was looking at both, and choose WFU as it was cheaper than UVA OOS. To be frank, they are very comparable institutions and I can imagine your daughter to have many great academic opportunities at both.

If you are in-state for UVA, I would opt to go there if it is significantly cheaper that WFU. I honestly don’t think WFU is worth the extra $30,000+ to attend if you are full pay for both in-state UVA and WFU.

If money is not a concern, I would visit campus and just really look at fit.

Both UVA and WF provide an excellent education. Premeds should also look at Duke and Georgetown where there is more GPA inflation to improve your odds of getting into med school.

Which did she choose? :)

Wake Forest and the Demon Deacons! We were down to 9 pm PST but in the end she loved the vibe and size of Wake. Everyone she met there couldn’t have been nicer. Hopefully she will have a happy four years!
