Wake Forest Scholarship Weekend

I was recently notified that I was one of the 24 merit scholarship finalists for Wake forest and was asked to attend the Scholarship weekend next month. When I originally read it, I thought it was something that they sent out to most people...but now the importance of it is just soaking into me. Am I guaranteed acceptance by their asking me to attend this weekend? How seriously should I be taking this opportunity?

You’re not. Pretty Important.

I believe you will get accepted. Go to the weekend. My son went last year and is a happy freshman.

Was your S one of the 9, iluvchocolate?

and by that I mean of the the 9 that receive full tuition.

He received a full scholarship from Wake. Many of his friends are people he met over scholarship weekend.

Wake is very generous with their scholarship students. He has had so many opportunities and he really loves the school.

Honeybee – how were you notified?

I received an email this afternoon.

I was notified yesterday afternoon too (although I didn’t see it until midnight). And I’m honestly still in shock about the whole thing.

And this is just a personal opinion/guess, but I would think that unless you REALLY behave badly over this scholarship weekend, that the finalists are pretty much guaranteed acceptance. Why else would they be selected and money paid to fly them to campus?

Congrats! Hope you all enjoy the weekend. The new provost (Rogan Kersh) was a Reynolds Scholar so you all are in good company!

My son didn’t receive that email but received one regarding the presidential scholarship. Did the email you all specifically reference Reynolds? I guess he must not be in the running for that scholarship.

Yes ours referenced that we were in the running for about 9 full scholarships under the names reynolds, graylyn, carson…

Would those of you selected as finalists please post your stats, etc?

So, does that mean that if I was not notified, I will not get any merit aid? That’s disappointing:(

I wish I applied WF by Dec 1st… Do you think there is any possibility of getting merit scholarship for those who submitted app after Dec 1st?

Slaybelle and Shozy786, all major scholarship candidates which includes the full rides, presidential, and full tuition scholarships have already been notified earlier in the winter about completing further on-campus interviews the last couple weeks.

However, there are many, many other partial merit-based scholarships that are incoming freshmen and upperclassmen can qualify for. A lot of these scholarships are restricted based on geographical location or other factors, though. Less than 2% of applicants are offered a merit scholarship. Merit scholars are sent mass emails, and looking the number of people in the list in the last email that I received, it looks like less than 10% of the student body has any sort of merit-aid. This list includes upperclassmen-based awards. From the list of freshmen, it seems like around only 5% or so of the current freshmen class has merit aid.

Wake is already pretty competitive for general admissions, and awards merit scholarships to people who typically fit the profile to be accepted to higher-tier schools like Duke, Vanderbilt, Ivies, etc as a means to persuade them to accept Wake’s offer.

For a list of all merit-based aid please see this pdf: http://static.wfu.edu/files/pdf/admissions/ugscholarships.pdf

Anyone know when decisions come out? We’re down to waiting on Wake Forest and 1 other!
