Wake Forest vs Georgia Tech - neuroscience

Hi I’m new to College confidential, but would definitely love others’ advice. I’ve had a really rough month because I was waitlisted to most schools that I applied to and I’m now trying to decide between wake forest and Georgia Tech in the next five days. My parents are pushing wake forest because they feel it is a better fit for me, but I really love the idea of going to college in a big city. Planning to major in neuroscience and go on to medical school.
People around me seem to have such strong opinions between the two schools, it would be great to hear from this community. Thankfully, because of scholarships and 529, finances do not have to factor into the decision between the two schools.

I am with your parents  medical school is extraordinarily competitive to get into these days. There are too many stories of people with high MCAT scores and perfect 4.0s being rejected and waitlisted - just heard of one yesterday coming from the honors college at a top state school. People are applying two and three years in a row. The most important factor in getting into medical school is your MCAT and your GPA. Georgia Tech is very difficult. The saying over there is Cs get degrees and they do and they get jobs but they won’t likely get you into medical school.

I understand wanting to go to college in an urban area, but Winston Salem is not small. They have a medical school and residency program right there with lots of opportunities to shadow, intern etc. and beef up your resume. Add that to the fact that your parents think Wake Forest is a better fit for you and that would be the deciding factor for me. Two great schools though!

Thanks so much for your advice. You dittoed everything my fam has been telling me. Both schools are challenging, but Wake has the support in an amazing faculty and student body. Planning to commit to Wake tomorrow…

Good luck to your son on the GA Tech waitlist. Perhaps this spot will help
